to bullet proof this damn thing? as you can tell, im a newbie. a have a couple friends with TSis and GSXs and they keep breaking trannys and transfer cases and occasionaly snappin half shafts. so, where can i get beefed up parts before i mod the crap out of mine? my friend just swapped a G2 5 speed into his 91 in hopes that it would be better because of the different syncros, is this worth it? thanks

You have a few friends who choose to ignore 13+ years of established DSM experience and go things on their own. No wonder they do nothing but complain about DSMs… But it is nice to see you on you on a DSM board :)

DSM drivetrain is much better than most "outsiders" like to think. Certain things do break all the time, if you do not treat them right. So people who are inclined to bash DSMs tend to latch onto them and try to put down DSMs.

Here is a formula for a strong DSM drivetrain:

4 bolt rear end (92-94) cost around $400

4 spider gear center diff. cost around $500

Window weld your motor mounts or use polyurethane inserts (but be ware of inserts, as they are VERY stiff and make your car shake much more) ~$10-$100

Use lightest clutch possible that holds your power, or get real good at modulating your clutch. And make sure to properly break it in (500+ miles of CITY "STOP and GO" driving).

The idea is to avoid wheel-hop at ALL cost! So anything that you do go lessen it, will improve your drivetrain reliability. That also includes using your brain! Do not do 6000rpm clutch drops on a sandy street surface! Do not attempt to do AWD donuts or drifting… Also, turning your wheel all the way in one direction and then spinning your tires might send you into an AWD donut, but it is one of the worst possible things that you can to your drivetrain!

If you stick to the above recommendations, you will have minimal amount of drivetrain failures. I have broken just about everyone that can be broken, and most of the time it was my fault…

Once you get faster, there are more extreme things that you can do:

- Weld your center diff, this will be better on your tranny and will reduce the wheelhoop, but it will also put more stress on the transfer case and the left rear axle. You might be swapping more transfer cases ($80 each) and rear axles ($80 each), but fewer trannys ($1000)

- Lighten your car. The heavier the car the more stress on EVERYTHING.

PS: 2G trannys do have better syncros than 90-92 trannys. 93-94 cars have the same good syncros as 2Gs, so this would not be an upgrade for you.

If you do want to use a 2G tranny in a 1G, it must be from ‘95 or ‘96. ‘97-’99 had different diff ratios

thank you very much, i already have the 4 bolt rear thankfully. i ran into someone who runs mid 11s and to an outsider (camaro guy that hangs with us that we dont like, thinks he is gonna rape him LOL, he runs deep 12s, so hes cocky). i looked at it and only saw the 20g and wastegate, he said he runs mid to low 13s, he hasnt taken it to the track since the bigger turbo went on so he couldnt be exact. he told me just to upgrade the center diff before i beat it and i should be set. so thats good, i was hoping i wouldnt have to buy a custom tranny or anything. where can i get the center diff? :thumb:
