Edmonton,
hey i have a 91 TSi and i need a new tranny, what is the difference between all of the first gen tranny's? like will any 90-94 turbo tranny fit,or do i need a tranny from a 91 TSi??

91s car 6 bolt, 92-94 cars are 7 bolt, u need a 6 bolt transmission, and no, u can not use an awd trans in a fwd, i mean u can, but the cost of having an awd moddified for a fwd car outweighs the cost of a new fwd trans
u need a trans out of a turbo 91 fwd, u might be able to use a trans from a 90, but i think there is some small difference between the 2, i cant remember off the top of my head cause i dont own a 90, but i think theres something different about the 90 trans that u wouldnt want it

oh, i almost forgot to ask you, y in the hell would u put a 2g throtle body on a 1g? u do know that a 1g TB is considerably bigger then a 2g throtle body dont you? 1g= 60mm, 2g= 52mm
unless u ment a 2g throtle body elbow and mis-typed it in ur mod list, that would be an ok mod if u didnt want to buy a uicp with a mandrel bent elbow, cause u are going to have a hell of a time hitting 12s if u really did put a smaller 2g throtle body on ur car

haha, ya sorry, i meant that i gave a 2g tb elbow, and just an upgraded uicp, and the reason i ask the question about the tranny is because someone on the trader said that a 92 would fit my car, and i was like 99.9% sure that it wouldn't cause my car is 6-bolt, so thanks guys.

early 92 cars are 6 bolt, i think anything built after like may 92 is 7 bolt, but i could be wrong about the month, a 92 6 bolt would work in your car if u happened to find one, as long as its 6 bolt

What does a 6 bolt or 7 bolt have to do with the tranny? In order to fix your problem and make it as simple as possible, you need an AWD tranny from 6/90 to I believe April 92.

1990 tranny in a 91 will require a shifter cable bracket swap, but it will also give you a very nice short shifting tranny. A 91-94 in a 90 is more of a PITA, having to swap, cables, shifter/base, and shifter cable brackets.

Here is where it gets tricky. I believe it's May of 92 (and yes that's when the 7 bolt began), the tranny came with a 23 spline output shaft. YOu need to make sure teh transfer case has the correct # of splines to accept the output shaft from the tranny. If you happen to find a later tranny that has a 23 spline, and your transfer case is a 22 spline, you can easily swap the output shaft in your tranny to mate up to the t-case.

’92 7 bolt motor are so rare (less than 5%), they are not even worth mentioning… It just confuses the situation. I do not know of the 93/94 FWD transmissions followed the 7 bolt migration, because they certainly didn’t do so in AWD cars (’92 7 bolt AWD cars still had the same old ’92 tranny).

‘93-’94 cars had larger drive axles, if you were to put one of those trannys in your ’91 car, you will have huge leaks around the axles! So swapping to one of those trannys (which shift much better than 91-92) would also include swapping to matching drive axles, which are also considered stronger.

I would stay away from ’90 trannys. They might be common, but you will “ruin” your car to make it work with the ’90 tranny, it is the WORST shifting tranny of all the years and it is also the least rebuildable!

yeah i think i am just gonna stick to getting a tranny from a 91 TSi, cause i dont wanna any problems! i just want a straight up swap. so the awd will not just swap with mine will it?

the only problem i have with buying a used tranny over th internet is that who knows, it might have the same problem as mine, like i am sure i would be able to take mine out and be like yeah its perfect and sell it for like 400 bucks.
