I just bought a 92 talon tsi awd and i need to replace the clutch and 1st and 2nd gear syncronizers. I think i could handle the clutch but how hard would it be to replace those syncronizers?? Also, does the AWD make it any more difficult to remove the tranny? How difficult is it to get the tranny off? I am new to the site, but im hoping this being my first post, i will get all the help i need with my dilemma. Thanks guys!

Dustin

If you have worked on cars before the tranny should not be too bad. It just take a little while. After the first time you get it out each time after that takes a little less time. Once you get the tranny out, Then you are going to have to take it apart to fix the syncros. Which could be a pain. I had mine apart for shift forks. Looks extremely hard. If you have a manual you should be fine. Just remember if you mess something up, There goes your tranny. You know? Also taking off the tranny in your driveway can be a real pain, Unless you can hold it on your chest for a little. A lift would be a ton better to work with.

Manual trannies aren't that hard to take apart, as long as you remember which order it goes back together. I suggest taking it apart and as your taking it apart, line the parts up in order on the bench. Also try to do it all in 1 day, you don't want people walking by and touching parts, moving them around and such, that could really mess you up.

Thanks for the help guys. Do you think if i get a manual like a chilton's or a haynes, that would provide me with enough information on the clutch and syncro replacement and reinstallation? I saw the books the other day at Autozone because i bought one for my Turbo Thunderbird. I have worked on cars quite a bit. How heavy is a DSM tranny? Also, since my car is AWD, do i have to mess with the transfer case or any of that to remove the tranny?

hardest part is to get the shimming right. Throw away those craftsman torque wrench and get a real one from snap on. Shimming is very critical for bearing seatings. If you shim with too much preload, the bearing will experience excessive axial thurst stress. Too much endplay will cause the bearing to smack against the case and bearing race. Good luck.

Im wondering if i should just try and find a used tranny at a junkyard. Do you guys know about how much one will cost?

Dustin

Typical junkyard trannies go for about $500.
There's no guarantee a junkyard trannie will be much better.
I also endorse the VFAQ.com website, it has gotten me through my own tranny rebuild, although I didn't touch the syncros.
