I just got a 93' laser and second gear grinds when going into it (unless i am going really slow), what do u think the problem could be? thankx

Yes your synchro is no good but your going to find more than that worn out, 1-2 synchro assembly, bearings, synchros, gears.

Synchros are inside the transmission. The transmission has to be removed, taken apart and the parts replaced. You can remove the transmission yourself. But unless your a transmission expert and have all the specialty tools, you have to take it to a transmission shop to get it done.

I have the same problem. I'm taking my car in Tuesday to get the GM Synchromesh (BG Synchroshift) put in. I hope it helps. I was going to do upgrades to the car, but if I can't get it shifting right it's just going to be a hold over until a better car comes along. Looks like the 2nd gear is just prone to failure on 1g's or we all stress them a little too hard for what they're made to do.

Also there is a clutch pedal adjustment too. If you had the transmission out before, or even if you havent. It might be a good idea to try adjusting the clutch to see if that helps any. Its worth a try anyway. It never worked for me. But other people say it does.

Just so you know, you really don't need to take your car to a shop to do the fluid swap. Put the car on jack stands or ramps, and drain it all out, then fill it back up with what you want.

A friend of mine who has a 91 Tsi AWD and myself have both swapped out the fluid with things such as normal ATF, and B&M Trickshift, it helped a whole lot, only slight grind when i downshift into second doing about 40.

It's isn't actually the syncro gear, I had my tranny rebuilt by bmtranny and he showed me the common problem about the 1, 2nd syncro, there is a retaining clip in the snycro in the gear that pops out and doesn't let it out, mine would always pop out of 1st and 2nd, I would recomemend driving down to bm tranyy and let them take it out or do it your self and drive it there, They were really good, 1st and 2nd double gear syncro and 5th gear syncro plus labor was only 760 something dollars plus he got me the act 2600 for me.

My second gear grinds as well... and i was told if i just shift from 1 to 3 until i get fixed or ease it slowly into second i should be fine but i was on anohter form where this guy with a talon with the same problem had the tranny blow on a trip he did and he claims it was cuase of that or something kinda confusing.. but i am under the impressino that i won't blow it up if i drive lightly and just skip second or am i wrong and can that cuase my tranny to crack and die??

If you can prevent grinding you should be OK. It might still wear though and cause a problem later on.

I bought a second gear syncro ring today 28$ralliart all they had :(
everythings on back order things getting getting scarce here.

well yea I think some one should make a faq on replacing your syncronizers your selfbecause sycros are really friggen cheap. its like 100 bucks for all of them.My friend who has had several years of aviation mechanic experience and then is also a vw mechanic said its like a days job. the gears just stack he basically called the mitsu tranny a tinker toyas far a trannys he said its some thing you can definitley do on your own and ther no special tools. if you have the tools then you should be able to get every thing done on your own in like 5 to 6 hours.
