You can lower the tranny down from the car without taking out the motor. Its not too hard to do. The hardest part is getting it back in. Although it is an automatic so it shouldn't be as hard as a 5-speed.

Pulling an auto is going to be harder, especially if its on the ground. You can take the trans out w/o the engine. As far as where to get one I would either buy a new one, (call mitsu) or have a shop rebuild it, DO NOT buy a used one unless you know it works.

you can drop your tranny without moving the engine, just disconnect the bolt that holds the transmission, take out both hubs and disconnect the strut assembly and pull out the axles. Remove the starter, take out the bolts and lower it into a big moveable jack. better if done between two people, u don't want a 200lbs transmission falling on your head while you are under the car.
As far as getting a new one, go ad buy one from a junkyard and have it checked by a TRUSTY shop and pay for any parts they feel should be replaced. Don't be cheap when it comes to transmissions, but be reasonable, compare costs and you'll see it'll always be far cheaper than buying from mitsubishi.
