Shifting or down shifting to second and sometimes first.

Hey guys. I just joined. and I just got a 92 GS. What i've been reading through searches, I think it might be the transmission fluid. But when I shift from 1st to 2nd. the gears grind hard and then goes into second. That's under normal or fast shifting. If i shift it slowly.. it'll go into gear fine. This goes for downshifting to second as well. I've drove it about 15 miles. and then i smelled something like burnt metal coming mostly from the front left wheel. I'm thinking that's where the gears are. I hope I didn't do significant damage to the transmission. This also happens on first gear when I press the clutch and go into first from neutral. 3rd , 4th, and 5th shift perfectly fine. I just got this car so I don't even know how long this has been going on for from the previous owner. Do you guys think I have to get the transmission checked out? Sorry but I'm a real newbie. I think it is probably your syncros. But changing the fluids should help.
