Got my salvaged AT/AWD running this weekend after putting the new head an whatnot on it, engine runs great, checked the trans fluid, seemed kosher, so i put it on the road for the first time
Put it down in D, starts off creeps along good, didnt get on it or anything, shifts itself to second, good..

Then around 40-50 *i think*, it tries to shift again, but tach just raises, like i went to neutral, made the noise like that deep clunk when you change gears to, on its own. give it gas.. no go.
Put it back in D2, revs go back up, creeps along fine..
Put it back in D, no go..

Simple fix or is this trans hosed? Seems damned unlikely that the trans wouldnt have been working before the rebuild, whod have drove it around with just 1 an 2 long enouhg to break a tbelt?

Any advice /info appreciated, very limited experience with the ATs

It sounds like the auto tranny might be in "limp" mode since it only goes to 2nd gear. But usually if the tranny fails and puts itself in limp mode it won't try to shift beyon 2nd. Maybe a rebuild is instore---dawww!
good luck!

I thought the tranmission goes into failsafe in 3rd gear? In any case, try this. Put it in drive and make sure that the overdrive is off. Get up to speed and you should be in 3rd gear at about 3000 RPM at about 50 MPH. Then hit the overdrive button. If the RPMs rise and the car doesn't accelerate, seemingly in neutral, then it's the end clutch probably, in which case it costs about 40 dollars and 15 minutes to fix.

Go to http://www.plymouthlaser.com for more info about it.

EDIT - Check the fluid too, but I'm betting it's the end clutch, the stock ones are so thin, they suck. :thumb:

Heres what i typed to aol guy today:

first i thought it was a 2nd-3rd synchro problem
leave it in 1st or 2nd, driveability is ok, let off the gas..engine revs down with gears
put it in drive, spools through 2nd
either no shift to 3rd..or hard shift
but has difficulty going back to 3rd
turn off the OD, shifts the same, no rev change as before when gears engage as they did before
3rd gear synchro gone?
it all started after i ran the tank almost bone dry
put in some heet in case it sucked alot of water and pissed off the ecu
fluids are all good, and no leaks
wont go in 3rd, when it tried it felt like it downshifted to 1st

Tranny was rebuilt 50-60K ago by pro-tech performance with a complete performance rebuild, hall stall converter, etc ect..meant to be a 500HP+ badass tranny w/ no problems. told by aol guy it might be a bad clutch pack. PRo-tech should be contacting me soon tommorrow. ABS light came on about 6 months ago. driven just fine since. I'm assumign that was caused by a bad speed sensor..could screw with the ecu and tranny..but it shoulda done that from day 1 not 6 months later.:thumbdown

I had a Level 10 rebuilt tranny completely take a crap at Maple Grove...had symptoms ALMOST similar to yours after that bad day and pass. I was in "Fail safe" mode and then it got worse and I didn't even have that.
Anyhow, I am having it rebuilt by John and his crew. Great guy and let me hang around a bit while he tore my tranny down...had the problem spotted in about 5 minutes and it did not look good!!! It was bent, burnt, broke, scored and toasted. I have some ugly pics of warped clutches and a bad valve body and pump. Yeh, Level 10 parts toasted, but it is being fixed up nicely now.
Check his site out, they offer heat treating of tranny parts, regular overhauls if you are on a budget, upgrade TQs etc...cool shop.
