Well, I've never liked messing with manual trannies in cars even though i've done plenty of bikes, but i had a 1g NT trans that was good and a 2g GS-T trans that had a few holes in the case and the diff was shattered. I had always been scared of a mitesu build because of when i was reading about it there was a line something like "some pieces will fall out when you split the cases, but it will be obvious where theey go" And this trans was in pieces when i got it
I took the busted trans the rest of the way apart (it was down to just split cases with the 2 gearsets in when i got it) Started cleaning and heating and welded the 3 small holes and the one the sizeof a quarter after much cleaning, heating, welding, cleaning , welding etc...
ONce i was satisfied with the case i decided to go about using the diff from the other trans to make this one whole again. I had posted on here and was told that was the only part that would interchange (and thank god it did) I even had to pull the outter races and spacers from the NT trans, becuase when i put it together with the turbo trans outer bearings the diff was just flopping around in there..no good.. SO a little bit later and with the pleasure of smelling like trans fluid for a while longer, i got the races and spacers and was able to set the diff to spec
Probably one of the toughest parts was learning that you just pull the pins from the shift forks when you put it together.. you should have seen me trying to put the 2 gearsets and 3 shift rods all in together (what a sight
)
I"m happy with the repair as i'im sure it will hold, I just wish i would have at least had a diff insert to throw in while i was there. The good thing is now i can get rid of the one "doner trans", and I now have a spare if god forbid i blow this TRE, or if i need the cash i could always sell it (i could NOT find a used 2g FWD turbo trans anywhere in the country when i needed one, i had the junkyard i use to work at search all 63 of their stores and not a single one!)
But, now that i have a full spare engine with everything to make it run and a trans to go with it, I"m dreaming of some sort of rear engine rear drive kit car
. .. Tube frame and all would be sweet as hell!!!!!!!
Anyway, onto the pics.
The first 2 are of the quarter sized hole after the start of repair (there was a lot more repair to keep it from cracking in the end). The next two are my fingers pointing to where the other 3 little holes were.
After that the trans is half together waiting on the doner diff.... Then there's a pic of it by my garage door along with my new engine! Then the last 2 pics are of me getting 5th in and tightened and then one of it all bolted together. I got this thing in boxes over a year ago and it's just sat in my garage, now it's actually something usefull
(now, to get my ARP'ed 1G rods and a set of .020 over 2g pistons and some old turbo cams stuffed in that NT long-block, i can't afford another full on build and it will be nice to have a fully running spare instead of one that i have to strip to get the other running)
REMEMBER...the first pic is about half through the hole repair...the weld would keep cracking on opposite sides when i would weld one, after enough welding and grinding and re-welding it all came out buttery smooth!!!!!
