Well, I've never liked messing with manual trannies in cars even though i've done plenty of bikes, but i had a 1g NT trans that was good and a 2g GS-T trans that had a few holes in the case and the diff was shattered. I had always been scared of a mitesu build because of when i was reading about it there was a line something like "some pieces will fall out when you split the cases, but it will be obvious where theey go" And this trans was in pieces when i got it

I took the busted trans the rest of the way apart (it was down to just split cases with the 2 gearsets in when i got it) Started cleaning and heating and welded the 3 small holes and the one the sizeof a quarter after much cleaning, heating, welding, cleaning , welding etc...

ONce i was satisfied with the case i decided to go about using the diff from the other trans to make this one whole again. I had posted on here and was told that was the only part that would interchange (and thank god it did) I even had to pull the outter races and spacers from the NT trans, becuase when i put it together with the turbo trans outer bearings the diff was just flopping around in there..no good.. SO a little bit later and with the pleasure of smelling like trans fluid for a while longer, i got the races and spacers and was able to set the diff to spec:hellyeah:

Probably one of the toughest parts was learning that you just pull the pins from the shift forks when you put it together.. you should have seen me trying to put the 2 gearsets and 3 shift rods all in together (what a sight LOL )

I"m happy with the repair as i'im sure it will hold, I just wish i would have at least had a diff insert to throw in while i was there. The good thing is now i can get rid of the one "doner trans", and I now have a spare if god forbid i blow this TRE, or if i need the cash i could always sell it (i could NOT find a used 2g FWD turbo trans anywhere in the country when i needed one, i had the junkyard i use to work at search all 63 of their stores and not a single one!)

But, now that i have a full spare engine with everything to make it run and a trans to go with it, I"m dreaming of some sort of rear engine rear drive kit car :hellyeah:. .. Tube frame and all would be sweet as hell!!!!!!!

Anyway, onto the pics.

The first 2 are of the quarter sized hole after the start of repair (there was a lot more repair to keep it from cracking in the end). The next two are my fingers pointing to where the other 3 little holes were.

After that the trans is half together waiting on the doner diff.... Then there's a pic of it by my garage door along with my new engine! Then the last 2 pics are of me getting 5th in and tightened and then one of it all bolted together. I got this thing in boxes over a year ago and it's just sat in my garage, now it's actually something usefull :D

(now, to get my ARP'ed 1G rods and a set of .020 over 2g pistons and some old turbo cams stuffed in that NT long-block, i can't afford another full on build and it will be nice to have a fully running spare instead of one that i have to strip to get the other running)

REMEMBER...the first pic is about half through the hole repair...the weld would keep cracking on opposite sides when i would weld one, after enough welding and grinding and re-welding it all came out buttery smooth!!!!!

Just make sure you don't forget to install everything. It's very easy to overlook a small clip or ring here-n-there. But I know you're all over it.

Congrats for having the stones.

That's awsome man :thumb: That is what I would like to accomplish next. Get a used AWD tranny and learn to rebuild it. I completely rebuilt my engine so I got that down.

Much respect:hellyeah:

Thanks fellas! If it weren't for the link to download a 2g service manual that ludachris posted, I would have been lost. MY chiltons doesn't even go into that detail, nor does the other .pdf manual i have. I didn't take the cluusters apart so i didn't have a lot to worry about, but there's some little tricky bits to it. I don't know how many times i left out the "oil guide" piece of plastic, then i even forget it when i silicone it all up and set in the last bolt i realize it's coming back apart, getting wiped down and re-sealed.

It was a nice fun little project, and i'm no longer scared of a DSM tranny, I've now re[aired the cases, torn them down and assembled from scratch and it's actually really easy after you figure out just to pull those damn "spring pins" in the shift forks LOL

Sorry for bringing this back up but I've always read that the '90-'92 1g FWD trans have different sized axle shafts than the '93-'94 1g's and the 2g's.

What did you encounter with this Glenn? Was the NT trans a '90-'92 or a '93-'94?

TO be dead honest with you i'm not sure about this. The CV's looked the same but i didn't count the splines, the axle stubs that i put in to store the tranny were from the donor car. I'm pretty sure it was an early model though so this is something i should check into i guess.

Can anyone else shed some light on this? the only thing i can think that would be different would be the splin count but i only took a brief visual comparison to the outer side of my 2g shafts while they were still in the car.

well, it looks like i'll start searching for a new diff, or see how hard it would be to use the CV cups in my trans with the rest of the later model CV
