This weekend I drove down to Toledo OH (about 1-1.5 hrs) on friday. Saturday morning I drove a couple miles down the highway, got off and the trans was really hard to shift, then when I stopped at a light I had it in 1st w/ the clutch pedal on the floor and the car wanted to roll forward like an auto trans!! As soon as I popped it out of gear it stopped rolling. Then when I went to put it back in 1st it wouldn't go in. Ever since then, it has been really hard to shift and has rolled in gear with the cluch pedal depressed (sometimes a lot, sometime not too badly). The only time it feels normal is when I rev match and don't touch the clutch at all. I don't have a problem driving around like that, except for when I need to stop at light or stop sign.

Basically, what would cause this and how do I fix it? Is it the master/ or slave cylinder? I am new to trouble shooting manual trans problems, any help would be great.

my friend had the same exact problem. It turned out to be loose transmission bolts that came loose from going over train tracks too fast. Every time he stepped on the slutch the engine and tranny would separate and the clutch would not disengage. Check to see if this is it by stepping on the clutch and looking for any play in the trasmission, the transmission shouldnot move at all when stepping on and off the clutch.

I am having a very similar problem. I push the clutch in and nothing happens. There is almost no pressure on the pedal and I could not find any leaks. At first i thought it was a problem with either the master or the slave. would the loose bolts cause me to loose clutch pedal pressure also? I am guessing seperating the trans would be eaisier than disengaging the clutch which would create less pressure?

Well, when it happened to my buddy there was no real noticeable loss of pressure. So it sounbds like it might be your master or slave cylinder. But just pop the hood and have one of your pals step on the clutch a couple times and look for some free play between the engine and trans.

clutch troubleshooting:

put your pedal to the floor, let it off, stick your foot under the pedal and pull back, did it move back a little bit? if so youve got a faulty end on your clutch pedal (its worn and rounded).

if not? lay under your car and look at the clutch fork (where it goes into the tranny). pull that little boot off. physicly where does the fork enter the transmission? (like on the passenger side or driver side of the hole?). if physicly enteres the hole closer to the passenger side, i would recomend taking your transmission off and shimming the pivot ball with a washer.

if not? check your slave/master. move open the little rubber boots on the cylenders... if they dump fluid they're your problem... they can also leak back into the tank.

if its still bad, check your clutch adjustment at the pedals

if not, check your clutch for wear (you should do this when you shimmed the pivot ball)...

etc etc etc... just a few possible scenarios: i think im going to write up a nice big document on this in a few days...

later, coppedge

Thanks for the tips, I'll have to take a look soon. I did check the resiviour(sp) and it was full, and as much of the hydraulic system that I could see was leak free (it was on a lift, so I got a pretty good look underneath). I am going to have one of the guys at the Chrysler store look at it (owned by same guy that owns the store where I work), hopfull he'll be able to tell me something.

As an addition tothe symptoms, it does work properly when I 'pump it up', like when you do a brake job, you pump the pedal a few times before you move. Well, I have to do that every time I want to use the clutch. Though if I don't release it all the way it still works. I only do this for the 1-2 shift, and shift as soon as I can to limit slipping the clutch excessivly. The problem seems to be getting worse b/c I am needing to pump more times to get a firm pedal.

sounds like master seals are bad and arnet holding the pressure unless you push em hard enough to get a good seal.

Dude thanks for the help, I installed a 2600 on my AWD and the clutch wouldnt disengage. So I put the stock clutch back in for now. When I get back home from college I'll be sure to check some things out on my car. Again thanks.

My engine is on the floor now due to the same problem. Here is what I found. The offending spring was under the pressure fingers blocking operation.
