Tranny is TOAST! Questions...

Whelp, the tranny shop I took my 4 to called today after taking it out of the car & informed me it's totally shot. I know this shop is very reputable so I don't question his asessment. Now for my dilemma: he said that rebuilding wouldn't be worth it due to the bad shape everything is in...would be over $3k to do so possibly (everything is shot)...and for a "rebuilt" unit from his distributor is around $2200. Now I've been looking at DSM-specific vendors like TRE & BM Tranny both of whom have rebuilds for under $2k. Anybody have any suggestions as to which place out there might be the cheapest/best to go with. I could go with a used TEL tranny or a JDM unit, but I want something I know is going to last.

You could probably get a used trans out of a salvvage yard for around $500 or $600, but it would also be worn out and ready to break soon. If you have the $ get a race built trans. Ask if they give a core credit on your old tranny.

I did the same thing you did. Archer Racing said that it would cost $3000 to rebuild my tranny because everything was junk, I mean everything. I just sent mine to TRE and got it rebuilt to their base model specs for $1725. Yours would probably be cheaper though because my center diff case was busted. But, yours might be just as bad as mine was.

Get it from TRE, and you won't have any more problems with it. I rebuilt mine with TRE parts, and I LOVE it. It shifts great, no grinding, no noise. Don't buy the generic one from their distributor... you want TRE's upgrades.

Thanks a mil for the responses guys! I think i'm gonna go ahead with the TRE tranny even though it won't be cheap (compared to a used DSM or JDM tranny that is). The quality is well worth it although it may take longer to get than I hoped (been in contact with TRE via e-mail all week). Wish me luck guys...gonna be droppin' a big ol' hunk of change on a new tranny soon

I have a GVR4 JDM tranny that is in perfect shape!! I'm selling it with the axles for $450. It has 90K on it and is imported from Japan. Send me a shout if you are interested. Thanks,

Thanks Vladi, but I ended up deciding against the TRE tranny as they seem to be very busy & it would take forever to get it. The shop my car is at is excellent so they're just gonna rebuild it. I guess I either misunderstood the owner or something as I initially thought he said it couldn't be rebuilt, but apparently it can be. It's not gonna be really cheap, but they're very very good so it should be worth it...I hope Thanks again
