takin the tranny apart

I want to take my 5spd tranny apart to put in a bm tranny lsd. holding the end cover and the main casing together (other than the bolts) seems to be some sort of black sealant. I bought the transmission rebuilt from a fellowe dsmer so im assuming that the rebuild shop put the stuff on there. My question is, what is it and should i put more on when i put the tranny back together? Do i really need to?

RTV works good. Maybe the gray stuff that's used on the oil pan, it supposed to be old resistant. I have a friend that just used high temp RTV (the red stuff) and his tranny didn't leak. But you should use some form of RTV type sealant.

It's RTV. Black, Red gey or Ultra Grey are fine to use. Make sure you clean the surfaces all nice before applying RTV.

there are VFAQs for the LSD insert as well as pulling apart a tranny. Follow them if you have never taken a tranny apart.
