i recently took the teeth off of the center diff third and the center diff input gear. i am now planning on beafing up the tranny a bit. i am going to put in a gv4 1st and input shaft a 23 spline tranfer case and a 4 spyder center diff. what i need to know is how to check to see if i need to shim any of the bearings and i am trying to figure out the tollerances and the method of checking the freeplay.

sorry for a lack of comma's i am at school and someone broke that button on the keyboard.

While I can't answer your question, I would like to toss out that adding a gvr4 first won't beef anything up; it's more fragile than our first gear.

you will need to shim it. The manual describes the process pretty well and has the part numbers for all of the shims.

where can i get this "the manual" are you refering to a chiltons or mitchell or what?

galant vr4 first gear may not beef it up but it is nice to have. 60'

You need the factory service manual. Some shafts require preload, while others endplay. You basically put a piece of solder on the bearing and torque the casing down. Then you measure your thickness of the solder. This will determine the size of the shim ... if you need preload add the spec to the thickness of the solder, if endplay then subtract. You need the manual to rebuild one of these...
