2g transmission in a 1g

Alright. The transmission in my 1991 Talon TSi just bit the big one and I'm looking for a replacement. I did a search and have found some conflicting info. Some say that a 2g tranny will work in a 1g car with no modification. Some say it'll work with some major modification. Some say it won't work at all. I'm looking for a definitive response from a knowledgable person. I'd much rather put the stronger, smoother 2g tranny in if I can, if its not too much trouble. Too much trouble would be moving mounts around to places they weren't designed to be at, buying a couple hundred dollars worth of new parts, etc.

If it helps the tranny code is W5M33 and the production date of the car is 6-91 and its AWD.

You are wanting to swap in an auto from a 95 2g. There is really no point in doing that. They are not any better than the 1g auto's. Do a manual conversion, it is very simple to do. Actually i have all of the parts to do the swap minus the tranny and transfer case. Look for a manual tranny and transfer (you might be able to use the auto t case) and i will sell you everything else that you will need for 75 bucks.

The mounts are different. It will bolt to the block, but that about it. I think it was Magnus (guessing) or somewhere did the swap and said it wasn't worth the time.

2nd gens are not stronger from the factory the 3-4 is weaker and also u have to watch what year the trans is the newer 2nd gens have a different final drive gear ratio
why dont u just get your trans rebuilt

Thanks for the info guys. I just got a used replacement from a Japanese Importer in Virginia. I didn't get it rebuilt because I have no idea how extensive the damage is inside. I may experiment with rebuilding it myself, I don't know.....
