I was driving my 91 GSX tonight and was leaving a store. It is wet weather outside, and I shifted hard into 2nd gear. Heard a Godawful noise, thought my tire blew, because the sound was like I was riding on a flat at 45mph. I pull into a nearby parking lot and check, the tires are fine. Start pulling forward and there it is again. I turn the wheels as far as I can either way and look, and on the driver side, it looks like the axle shaft broke at the u-joint and is now just kinda hangin there. Am I going to need an entire new driver side axle, or just the u-joint and shaft? I suppose I can get these parts from a junkyard or a fellow DSMer. How hard is it? I imaging it's just jacking it up, taking the wheel off, maybe the hub, and maybe undoing a few bolts and pulling the old one out, then reverse for the new one. If anyone has a walk through for this or can shed some light I'd REALLY appreciate it!
Also the driver side (broken side) especially seems to have a lot of grease all over the frame rails up that way and all over the seals and axle. Do ya think maybe a seal was bad or something and it leaked out grease, and this was a slow dying process for the axle?
