First off, is it possible to install the tranny back in the car with the transfer case bolted to it? The reason I ask is that the center output shaft got stuck in the transfer case and came out with it when I dropped the xfer case. I had to pull the transmission out in order for the output shaft to completely come out. The ball holding the shaft in place was missing.

I tried to get the shaft out of the xfer case, but it is stuck in place. So, in a last ditch effort, I was hoping maybe someone would know if you can put the tranny back into the car with the xfer case bolted up. I just want to get my car back on the road.

No. You won't be able to get around the flywheel with the x-fer case bolted up. But you've got other issues. If the output shaft is stuck then it's FUBAR'd. I wouldn't attempt to drive on it. The splines may go pop and strand you on your next trip.

Trust me, I have TWO messed up output shafts on my workbench!

Thanks for your reply. Yeah, I found out that the flywheel gets in the way. I ended up putting in the transfer case with output shaft attached and the oil pan on at the same time. That's something I don't want to do ever again. The car is back on the road and doing fine. Small oil leak considering I couldn't reach two of the oil pan bolts since the transfer case is in the way.

I have another transmission and transfer case on route that will be rebuilt and replace the one in the car since I can't separate the output shaft from the transfer case. I realized I'd have to replace this sometime soon in the future, but it needed to be running before the end of the month.
