VR-4 6-speed in my DSM?

If this has been discussed (I can't find it), then please kick my a##. I heard from some Honda :laugh: guys that a VR-4 transaxle has the same bell-housing and input shaft as the DSM. Is this true? Can I have six forward gears and not pay more than my car cost?

Do you mean the 3000 vr-4? If so no it will not bolt up.

just look at the bolt pattern/#of bolts!!!!!!! and tranny code!!!!!!! galant vr-4's are rare man. goodlucky in finding parts. even rarer than my alltrac. if you're talkin bout gvr4!!!!!

if hes asking for 6 forward gears, it would be the 3000gt/stealth tranny. i dont think it will bolt up, it has more bellhousing bolts to displace the torque over, and may have a diffrent diameter and lenght input shaft. then the bellhousing distance may bring the input shaft either too far into the crank pilot, causin the tranny not to seat, or it may be too short, causing questionable engagement. as for the gvr4 tranny, i have one of those in my car, they are very cheap, VERY easy to find (limited production here, not japan), have a taller 1st gear and are built better, plus they bolt right up and come with an entire aluminum transfer case.

The fwd 3s uses the same transmission code as the dsm turbo. Also I am pretty sure somebody has put the 6 speed in their 3s and made a fwd 6 speed.

You are probably better sticking with the setup you have. The getrag transission has problems with syncros, and the transfer case is prone to early failure on some models. It would probably be good for a drag racer since it is made to handle more power but a daily driver it wouldnt be much help.

Also the last gear is kind of worthless. Because your talking about using it in the 220+mph hour range. Most people max their car out in 5th and shift to 6th and slow down.

Maybe the whole 6 speeds are cool factor is worth it. Just get a 6 speed gear shifter knob from a vr4

Sorry, guess I didn't clariy, I am looking for a 3000gt VR-4 6 speed. I want six forward gears for acceleration (better placed gears equal better acceleration for cars sporting narrow powerbands, for cars like, well, me). A sixth gear in a Celica GTS is the same over all final drive ratio as my fifth (pretty damned close), so it wouldn't really boost my top speed in my mind, just help me find the right gear all the time.

There are alot easier ways to make up for the top speed. How ever it would be "cool" to have 6 gears! I do alot of highway driving (60 mile round trip to work & back 5 days a week) @ 80Mph plus, so it eats the gas I would like to be at 2-3000RPM every day instead of going 80+ and being at 3-4000rpm for 20 minutes when Im late!

NA manual 3000gt's came with the same tranny code as a turbo Fwd Dsm, i think off the top of my head it is like fm332 or something like that. but i am pretty sure that they change the bellhousing side of the case so it bolts up to the 3L block. if it even could bolt in, that tranny is huge i don't think it will fit without hitting the cradle brace in the back. not positive though.
