Hey guys.. gotta problemo here.. My buddy has a 91 gsx.. blown motor, block is trash, so we went shopping for a new one. Found a 90 tsi awd for 400. 8500 original miles, but blown tranny.. at least they think. The case was cracked on the tranny, so they welded it back togeher, thinking that was the problem. I went to check it out today, and i think the problem might not be that serious. The car will not go into gear while it is running. it'll grind, and act like your hitting a brick wall. But, if you turn the car off, and put it into gear, then start it. you can drive around in first gear, but can not shift into any others. I checked the slave cylinder, it has about 2 inches of movement and has plenty of fluid. I tried, while the car was running to go into any gear possible. The cluch feels really light, and it sticks about half way out, then pops out to the top. When trying to find a gear, i went for third, gave a good push, it grinded, and the car died?!?!?! I dont know what the problem might be.... any thoughts?
 
sounds like both...definately sounds like a clutch issue, but I sure wouldn't reuse a cracked housing even if it was welded up...that is just a bad idea for a number of reasons in my opinion...

my car is doing the same exact thing but the housing is not cracked ,i bought the car off someone after they put a new (clucth,pressure plate,throw out bearing,clutch master cylinder,and slave cylinder) in and could not figure out what was amater with it.now its at the transmission shop down the road.been there for a month now.
 
Never, and I mean never, take your trans to a "local shop"...you have to take it to a dsm shop, b/c these transmissions sucked from the factory and they will continue to suck unless you have someone that knows what they are doing rebuild it for you...

I have been posting alot of good info in another thread, mainly to do with everything else trans related...read up on this one, and if you continue to have problems, repost...

my clutch went out on me the other day on the way to work just wouldnt go into gear when i down shifted had to feather the throttle to get any results but even later with the car off i couldnt get it in gear every other car ive ever driven bad clutch or not u could still shift when the engine wasnt running do i have bigger problems than i know about? thanx in advance
 
sure sounds like clutch disengagment issues to me...I'm guessing when you say "feather the throttle to make it shift", you are clutchless shifting (ie power shifting).

Sounds like it is time to look at all the diagnositic stuff that I have been posting about that is clutch related. If you don't come up with anything based on that info, its time to take the trans off and see what you find...

Yes they have Hydraulic Clutch. And IMO Speed shifting/Power Shifting isn't very good on a stock tranny. BUt if I'm wrong please someone let me know.
 
i know its not that great on the tranny but its the only option i had
is there any way to check the pedal assembly w/o removing it?
 
found out what my prob was slave cylinder was WAY lose one bolt was gone and the other was only half way in once i tightened up the bolt that was there and replaced the missing one problem solved. :thumb:
