Hey guys just wondering if anyone has a diagram for what to weld in the center diff. I know I came across one a while ago but can't seem to find it again. Thanks!

You have to weld the two side gears to the cases. You can use the output shaft as a jig to make sure everything is lined up. I welded one gear down inside the basket part of the center diff, then slid the output shaft in, then installed the other gear and the cover for the center diff with two bolts, then tacked the other gear, then disassembled it and finish welded it. Stress relieved in a heat treat oven, new bearings, and I was good to go!

I authored a diagram a few years ago that I've shared with dozens of DSMers. Email me directly and I'll send it to you.

I should ask a moderator if there is somewhere it can be posted on this board so it is easier to find.

BTW - You don't need any jig to weld it and it'll cost you less than $50 to get it welded by a professional. It's very "cheap and easy."

A couple of things...

It locks the front and output shafts together making the diff 50/50 all the time and releiving the VC from any further duty and eliminates it as a failure point.

It allows you to gut the center diff so nothing inside can fail and take out other parts. The OE design is not very good and the thrust washers are prone to failing and wiping out the output shaft and the X-fer case. I went through two of each in 16 months.

You can now cut down the VC or install a VC eliminator and reduce a big chunk of recipricating mass. (You cannot just take out the VC, btw, it MUST be used to seat the output shaft retaining ball.)
