Wile tuning my afc I get this matalic rattle, like a loose heatsheild or somthing(picture a metal bearing tumbling around inside your motor), it happens at 2000rpms. Didn't think much of it, figured it was a exhaust rattle. Today I start the car and the same rattle(intemittingly) came on wile idling but goes away when it warms up, again fig it was the exhaust. Well my buddy came over wile I was redoing my vac hoses on the wastegate(getting boost creep like hell) and climbed in my car and started her up(he is impressed by all the gauges and the way the 4G63 sounds). I then noticed (hood was up) the sound seemed to be coming from inside the fing moter. Upon closer examination, I found the noise to be coming from inside the tranny bell housing right about wear it connects to the motor. Again it happens at 2000rpms or so. I have always had this noise, but at diff times. It originaly came on wile decelerateing around 3000-2000rps, thought it was the drive shaft. It progressed into hearing it at 2000rpms(car out of gear) and now in the morning(intermittenly) when I first start the car. Funny part is I don't hear it when decelerating anymore. Car runs good and really smooth up to redline and don't hear the noise at any other time except what I mentioned above.
P.S I don't here the noise at 2000rpms when the car is in gear wile cruising. Hope its not bad, but its getting worse!

Sounds like a throw out bearing, My NT is doing the same thing. Had the Clutch, Pressure Plate and bearing replaced. 2 Months later, Bad throw out bearing AGAIN!! Something else is wrong. If anyone knows what could be eating my bearing, let me know.

The noise went away:confused: But now theres a shreek when I first start the car. Seems like its in the intake somewhere. DSMs... it's a love hate relationship;)

I had a very similar issue in a 91 1G NT. The car ate an OEM clutch every 3-5K miles and had an intermittant rattling sound from the bellhousing. I attributed it to bellhousing misalignment caused by a broken front bellhousing mout point. The previous owner had broken the mounting ear off of the motor and corrected for it by drilling a hole through the front motor mount and installing a longer bolt through the mount. Not ideal, but it was a beater.
But I digress...
Over the life of four clutches and a replacement tranny,(I could swap a clutch in 2.5 hours in my driveway...) I never actually determined the problem. The worst part was that when the clutch went, it was blowing the springs out of the clutch plate with LOTS of wear left in the clutch. When one spring would break, it would cause a racket as the broken piece of spring ricocheted <<?>> around in the pressure plate, esp. when the clutch was disengaged.
Best of luck determining the root of the problem, and I would be interested in hearing what you work out.
