Does a 1g tranny fit in a 2g?

Just like title says. Also where is there a place to get used transmissions other than ebay and the classifieds here and dsmtrader.

I thought that 1st and 2nd gen transmissions were interchangable, with some minor details to address...not all the parts will bolt up. I think you will need 1G CV's and boots. DUnno why you would want to do that swap, the 2G tranny is superior.

You could propably find used ones through the local group of DSMers. They probably have a mailing list you could post on and ask.

1G trannies do not fit in 2G. Pop your hood and take a look. The 2G trans has three motor mounts on it, side/front/back. The 1G only has one mount on the side.
The 2G trans can fit a 1G with some modification to the mount.

So how does a 6 bolt swap work then? I was under the impression that you stick with your 2G tranny, but with what you said it wouldn't bolt up to the 6 bolt block.

OK so maybe I should make this a little more clear.

1G trannies do not fit in 2G cars because the mounts that hold the tranny to the car (previously refered to as 'motor mounts') are in different locations. For example, in a 2G the tranny has three mounts that hold it to the car, one on the front, one on the back, and one on the side. The 1G trans only has one mount that holds it to the car, and this mount is located on the passengers side. So if you tried to put a 1G tranny in a 2G car the mounts wouldn't match. This has nothing to do with the motor. Please forgive me for using the term, 'motor mount' when I was really talking about the mounts that hold the tranny to the car, not the motor. Sorry if I confused anyone.

In a 2g you only have 1 mount holding the engine ... and 3 holding the trans. A 1g is opposite. However swapping a 1g motor in a 2g car you can basically drop it right in because you only use the one mount on the motor that it shares with a 2g motor. The rest are trans mounts so you just reinstall the trans the same way you took it out. A 2g trans doesn't work in a 1g car because then you'd have 1 trans mount ( if you're lucky and can make it bolt up somehow ) and 1 motor mount. You need 4 mounts to hold everything in place though so that's why it won't work.

thanks for the replies, i was just wondering because my tranny is baout toast, and i cant seem to find a 2g tranny, but 1gs are easy to find.

so a 1g tranny would work in a 2g as long as a mount was moved or made to support the 1g tranny and with the 1g t case? Shift cables go to same spot, axles are the same?
