Well I am sad to say my tranny has seen its last leg. On the way home form dropping my girl off my tranny finally had enough and quit on me. The tranny had a bad 2nd gear and at times it was hard to down shift into 4th. Here is what took place up until it quit. I raced young kid in a honda on the way home on the highway…(blew his doors off..)…. then the tranny started to make a screeching noise. So all was fine on the highway but when I had to get off and hit the streets all started to fail. First I was sitting at a light and went to take off and the car started to jerk violently, so I shifted quickly to 2nd same thing, then to 3rd, it stopped, here comes the next light, same thing happened but I never reached 3rd cause all of a sudden I heard a big band and the car wouldn’t move, the smell of gear oil filled the car and there I sat. I had to leave it over night and in the morning called a tow truck, so when he puts the car on the flatbed I notice all my gear oil is on the ground. Haven’t had a chance to look at it yet but I am hoping it is just the tranny and not the transfer case plus tranny. Do you guys think both went and when I do my rebuilt should I rebuild the transfer case at the same time? Both will not happen for a while cause I need to save some money up so my Talon will be up for a while.

Oil on ground = $$, so be prepaired. You'll probably need the whole trans. As far as rebuilds, do them both. It's not much more.

Well guys I blew a hole in my tranny. I just came in from looking at it. I noticed some metal chips and the plastic shield on the passenger side so I went under the car. There looking right in my face a nice big hole:(. Guess that explains the bang and all the fluid on the ground. Going to be down longer then I hoped for:cry:

these transmision do have seals on them right...that could be the reason why they leak..because i know for a fact that i have a new tranny shifts good all gears good but leaks... so every month.. i have to fill it up....

Yes they do, all you have to do to replace the halfshaft seals is pull the half shafts and pop the old ones out and put new ones. They are 6 or 8 dollars at Napa. They also have an input shaft seal, which the tranny has to be pulled to replace and possibly disassembled. On the AWD's there is also an output shaft seal, which you would most likely have to pull the tranny to do as well, it is real hard to get at.

92whitephantom, the exact same thing happened to me last night, except it without warning...

I was driving along a 55 mph highway, straight, smooth road, hardly touching the gas, in 5th gear, 2500 rpm, car running great all night (all the time), all a sudden there was a big jolt, like the jolt if you stall the car, looked at the tach, it read 0, the check engine light was on... I coasted off the road into a neighboorhood, started up the car... It started fine, tried putting it into gear, and then I heard a bunch of fragments that sounded like metal and debris spin around, so I went looked around for the problem outside, I saw that there was a puddle of oil all over the road and curb... Looked under the car and saw it still dripping from the tranny... So, this morning it's on the way to a tranny shop on a flatbad, sad day...

I think my tranny is on its way out :( i'm starting to have trouble shifting into first and second gear when i'm stopped. i have to FORCE it in to first, which isn't a good sign. I thikn i'm just going to let this tranny go early and swap in a new one. it actually fits perfectly with my plans, since i'm doing an engine sawp (j-spec gst motor) and i'll need a new tranny anyway. Does anyone have a suggestion of a good racing tranny that shifts nice and is really reliable??? :dsm:

I found out that it was my differential that exploded, the holding pin failed and the spyder gear flew into the bottom then out the top of the casing. Put a quarter size hole in the bottom and a hole big enough to stick your first in the top.

There were no warnings...
