So here is my question. hopefully someone will have a good answer for me. I am mainly a 3g guy but have been working on a motor swap w/ a 2g gst. At this point i have the motor out and all the electrical swapped over to the new motor. The problem that i am now at is that the motor i am transplanting in is a 6 bolt motor and the old one was a 7 bolt. now that really isnt too big of a deal but here is my major problem.

1. the torque converter does not fit into the mits tranny (too shallow, it bottoms out on the shaft.

2. I cant use the old flexplate because it is a 7bolt crank side and i cant use the new flexplate because it is a 3 bolt torque converter side and the only converter that i have is a 4 bolt setup.

So here is my question. Has anyone run into this before and if so, do you know what torque converter will work with this setup or where to get a flexplate that is 6 bolt crank side 4 bolt converter side???

Btw here are the stats on the car its going in:

96 eclipse gst Turbo 2.0L

Any help would be much appreciated, Thanks

I am also in the process of doing this swap myself on my '97 Eclipse GS-T auto. I started back in January, and put the 6-bolt in, but did a different tranny install/mate process. I was not able to contact lowavenger96 and hear of his solution until I had already gone the other route. From other sources that I talked to, this is the process that I followed and the rationale:

The difference in the bushing on the end of the 1G crank results in a 1/4" difference, and sets the TQ 1/4" deeper, putting excess pressure on the pump, resulting in bad things. To offset this difference, a spacer of some sort could be used. Sooo, out of aluminum, I created a 1/4" spacer plate that would go between the bell housing and the engine block. This spacer allowed the TQ to sit at the same depth it would have with the 7-bolt engine in place, fixing the TQ depth issue.

As far as the flexplate, I was able to get a 4-eared 6-bolt flexplate ordered from a Mitsu dealer (cost was minimal), and just needed to lengthen the holes a bit to get it to mate to the TQ. I have the part numbers at home, and will post them for you if desired. From that point I put it all back together, and didn't seem to have any major issues with spacing.

Currently, the problem that I am having is the starter is grinding the TQ when turning the car over. Supposedly, you are supposed to use the same starter and alignment is not an issue. I have not been able to research this problem much, as the car has been sitting since March. I bought a house, and the Eclipse is still at my parents' place until I have the time/space at the new house. I am supposed to go work on it this weekend, and if any further headway is made, I will gladly keep you updated. For pics and details of the flexplate / spacer, visit my website and check out the pictures: Eclipse Project

There are lots of pictures there that you might find helpful.

Good luck, and keep us posted on your progress!

actually, if you could get me that part number for the 6 bolt 4 ear flexplate that should be all that i need. for some reason the tq that came out of the 6 bolt motor is just not fitting in far enough where as the tq that was in the tranny fits in with more than enough clearance. so hopefully if that 6 bolt 4 ear works than i will be hooked up, if you get this fast enough maybe i can go pick it up today =-)

Thanks,

I left a message with my parents to give me a call back as soon as they can so I can get the part numbers from the house. So I will hopefully post them some time this morning.

A word of caution/advice. You use the 7 bolt TQ. Now you are either going to have to bore out the bushing as lowavenger96 did, or make a spacer plate as I did in order to keep pressure off of your tranny pump. Although it does fit, and with clearance, if you put it back together as is, you will wipe out your tranny. I made the mistake of mounting the flexplate backwards (which set it back the 1/4" I was trying to save) and wiped out my tranny on the first run. Finding a used reasonable tranny for these cars isn't fun!

I pm'ed you as well.

I talked to my Dad, he could only find the part number for the 'Reinforcement Plate' that I also needed along with the Flexplate (also known as the Drive Plate by the Mitsu dealers). That part number is MD952138 and it is a ring that goes inside the flexplate, which you will also need.

I am going to look for the invoice when I get home, as that should list the part numbers. As long as I can find that, the Mitsu dealer said they could bring up the order info. For some reason they can't look it up by my last name.

well hit me back when you get that part number for me. btw how much would you want to machine me that piece that i need (spacer)???

Thanks,
Nefarius

Allright, I found the three part numbers that I needed. The first is for the flex plate: MD735674 The second is for that reinforcement plate as mentioned above as well: MD952138 Finally I need to get a crankshaft bushing. I don't quite remember why I needed this as well, but I will look at past emails to track it down: MD732972

As far as the spacer, let me talk to my Dad and see if he will have the time to make another one. He made it for me and I have no idea how long it took him.
