i bought a 91 talon tsiawd with a shot x/fer case a while back and am now fixing it for summer. i know i need to replace the x/fer case, but i was thinking that i might as well do the clutch and maybe the tranny while im down there. the car grinds into 2 and 3 on quick shifts, but the clutch seems OK...what's the best clutch to get and what should i do about the tranny? rebuild? if not, what tranny would be best on a budget?

To be honest, just about every single question of yours could have been answerred in the last 25 posts.. the most popular clutch for the awd is the ACT 2600 -

Of course, there's much more information out there. This is just some to get you started. I wouldn't really say that it'd be a 'while your under there' kinda job. The transmission is not removed to get the transfer case off. It's one of the steps, but certainly not the only one.

And if you want the car to stop grinding into 2nd or 3rd, you will most likely need new 1/2 and 3/4 synchros - have you tried a better tranny fluid like BG Synchroshift or Synchromesh?
