Bay Area,
im thinking of going to the track soon for the first time in my gsx, and i was wondering, does anyone have any preferences for launching that might help me get a good 60ft? I do have 4 way adjustable shocks, and i am currently using recommended tire pressures, 32 in the front, 29 in the back. Ive tried launching here and there, ive tried building boost and then launching, ive tried slipping it. So far it seems to me like slipping it at around 5.5k works the best. however i am not sure because i havnt ran yet. I use the hardest setting for my shocks in the back [4] then 3 in the front. Any suggestions?

I think i will be happy with anything better then 2.0 for my first time.

Sounds like you have it figured out pretty good. Don't worry about your reaction times for the first few launches. You want to be able to get a good rythem with revving and slip dump the clutch. Depending what kind of light tree you running under, I usually let up on the clutch on the third light.
Good luck

so you think mysettings are fine and i should slip it till i have traction then dump?

Reving it up to about 5500 and then quickly slipping the clutch seems to work best for me. Doing it that may I was able to get consistant 1.8's on 18's....

Dumping the clutch breaks things. Usually expensive things.

I always though slipping the clutch breaks things.I mean you are riding the clutch ...alot... So im guessing I was wrong about the AWD dump, never driven an AWD so it was a guess.

AWD works best with a fast, aggressive slip of the clutch. Of course the type of clutch matters, too. A worn out stock clutch should be dumped because it won't grap right away anyway. A good aftermarket clutch should be handled with care. Slipping it too much could glaze the friction disc, which will reduce it's holding power.

both ways arent the best on a stock clutch. slipping burns it out faster and dumping eh well isnt good for the clutch or tranny.

your stock clutch most likely wont grab right away even if u dump it, but try to agressively slip it real quick and dump it, dumping on a stock clutch will most likely just slip alittle anyway and not be to hard on the tranny, with my 2600 i slip real quick at 5500 then let it rip, with 40 series tires on 17s i pull consistent low 1.7s with best of 1.71,

Dumping the clutch shocks your drivetrain rather badly... you can do it, just don't throw a shit fit when something does break. :thumb:

Anyone who has been to the track knows dumping the clutch makes for a horrible run.

Unless you have a clutch that wont grab, when you dump it it will just bog the car down.

my friend with a 03' wrx sedan on the stock clutch, he said he tried to dump it real fast and it just bogged and started even slower then if he wasnt even trying to get fast off the line

i will be going to the track the day after tommorow.

Dumping the clutch breaks things and makes you bog. My advice for launching is to keep tapping the throttle to keep it between 5K and 5.5K (to build boost) and just smoothley, but quickly slip the clutch, then anticipate when the clutch is going to grab and put the gas down to the floor, that method was good for 1.8-1.9 60' times on a completly stock awd.

I am lookin foward to launching when I get dsmlink. Studda, studda

Here's the way I do it. Ever since I started doing it, it was the easiest way to slip the clutch ever. Just rev it to about 4700-5350 rpm's play with it, tap the gas with your foot and let it keep swinging up kinda fast between those rpms. Then when it's time to go, let go of the clutch on an upswing of the rpm's. Then as it's slipping, just let go and gun it. IM me on AIM if you need a better explanation. So far my best 60' has been a 1.72 and 1.74 on some cheap all seasons along with other misc. mid 1.7s. I'd say it's a pretty consistent launching technique being I did about 25 runs at the shootout like this and the worst 60' was a 1.83.

http://www.dsmchips.com/ can get you 1G guys a stutter launch at whatever RPM you want. DSMlink is still pretty nice. I was at the track the other day and saw a WRX dump the clutch and not go anywhere. Guess what happened?

Blew out not one, not two, but three forward gears. This was on an '03 STi too. I laughed. And pointed. The same will happen to you if you drop the clutch. ;)

:dsm: :laser: :talon:

Yeah, I got an EPROM ECU and a Keydiver chip stutterbox a few weeks ago. It's a lot easier to nail down the launch, but I still have to use the method where you slip the clutch just a bit, then when you're moving and it starts to grab you feed in more throttle and dump the clutch the rest of the way out. I think that's called the "slip/dump" method.

whenever i hear dumping the clutch i always refer it to as just some1 revving there shit up and just dumping and peeling/burning out for fun. i never refer it to as a type of launching. slipping is for launching

dumping the clutch at 5k netted me a destroyed 3-bolt rear :(
just an excuse to put my 4-bolt in :thumb:
slipping to me makes it come out alot smoother

dumping cost me a tranny and a rear lsd .. slipping cost me a clutch .. so i prefer to easy my way outa the box .. but then again i only had a bully stage 1 .. pretty BS

currently looking for a ACT

yea im planning to go to the track this weekend. It will be my first time too. i was practicing my AWD launches with the ACT 2600 at 4500 to 5000 RPMS with a quick slip then dumping it. It was practially impossible (since that clutch grips like noone's buisness). I only got one good launch when i dumped it at 5500 RPMS. All of the other times i would spin the front wheels untill the back wheels gripped and i started moving... anyone know how to prevent that wheel slippage with an AWD?

It sounds like you're putting down some good HP to spin the fronts. There's a few different ways to help with that. The most common is to weld the center diff, or get a center diff spool. That way your front and rear wheels are locked together. The drawback is that it's a slight pain in the butt when going around slow and very sharp turns.

You could also get some type of LSD for the front diff. But DO NOT get a front LSD AND a locked center diff. Trust me, it sux.
