Since I haven't been on here until yesterday, I'll give as much info as I can on my car and what I've done. Some of my friends and even some people up here I don't know, like LaserLX, have given correct info.

The car: 1990 Talon TSi AWD, currently at just over 78,000 miles

Best ET: [email protected]
Best MPH: [email protected]
Best 1/8 ET & MPH: [email protected]
Best 60': 1.65

Race weight: car+me+1/4 tank or so gas= 2850 lbs.

Mods: K&N, XBC, Magnecor wires, BPR7ES plugs, ported '95 mani, ported turbine housing, portedO2 dump, 2.5' DP, test, 3" ATR, DSM performance underdrive crank pulley, Extreme fuel pump. Eibach pro, KYB AGX, Power Slot rotors, stainless lines, Axxix pads, full Energy Bushing kit, Prothane motor mount kit, ACT 2600-full face disc, front and rear strut braces, lower honeycomb removed as well as divider wall in that same lower chamber, TB coolant bypass, EGR block.

Other things: carbon fiber hood, OMP pins, Racing Hart CP035 16X7--9.6 lbs. each, Z-Speed lightweight lugs, Nitto Drag radials.

I launch anywhere from 5000 to 5600 depending on my traction and track conditions. Tire pressure varies from as low as 18psi to street 31 psi, again, depending on track prep and track temp.

I DO NOT power shift the 1-2 or the 2-3. Friends of mine have actually said to me after some of my passes, "Phil, it looks like you are shifting slow from 1-2,"....well, I am. My 2-3 shift is very quick, even quicker than my 3-4 power shift, but, it is not a power shift, I do back off the throttle. I shift the 1-2 before my front wheels hit the 60' in most cases, hence the 1.73 60' on my 12.02. Not exactly a quick 60'. I shift the 2-3 and 3-4 between 6100-6400, yes, that early. I am in 4th gear before I hit the 1/8 mile, probably around 600ft. I have run 4.97 seconds to the 330' mark, 10.0 to the 1000'. Estimated 0-60mph blast of 3.3 seconds.

I have been drag racing the Talon since October of 1996 when it was bone stock......best time was [email protected], and still the slowest time ever on the car was 14.99@89, this car was never in the 15's. The funny thing is, I couldn't drive it at all back then, I had the car for 20 days at that point, my 60's were 2.0. Had I known a little more about driving it then, I might have run 14.5-6 in bone form.

So, this has been a long road for me....14.85 to 12.02...almost 3 second gain without a turbo swap. My turbo has never been out of the car, it stayed in when I swapped turbine housings. Over 22 mph gain in MPH, on the same turbo.

So, do hold the record? So I thought. So I'm told. I have the quickest 14b time on the list at this point. Yes, I heard of an 11.98 pass, I tried to contact the person and learn more about it with no replies. Just someone that knows him or saw him once or whatever. Not that I doubt the possibility....I saw a list of mods that showed 8.5:1 pistons and balance shaft removal and other mods...so, its possible, but, for some reason, that person, if this is true, does not want to be known.....and being from CT and living in MD, no, I don't surf Carolina DSM's site.

Last, what is still stock...I/C and piping, injectors, intake tube and aircan still there, stock turbo outlet elbow is still there, intake mani and t/b, and engine itself is bone.

AS far as quickest DSM with least mods.....I can honestly say, I hold that title. Next year is coming fast, I am not done with the 14b yet.....I have a few more things I want to try yet......

I think I covered it all....any additional questions are welcomed. Later, guys. Again, thanks to all supporters of my journey so far, and in the future.

Hey Phil thats very impressive as Im sure noone really needs to tell you that. Anyhow Id really like to know what youve done as far as lightening the car. Im sur everyone else would appreciate a list as well. 28xxlbs with you in it is AWESOME. I was going to PM you, but i think that if you were to explain your lightening process it would help a lot of others and be most appreciated by me =) THanks,

Austin Candela

Phil, you are an inspiration to the rest of us! (myself, at least:D ) I've been modding my '91 GSX for the last 4 or 5 years and following along with everyone trying to maximize the 14B. Your setup seems to be the least modded, compared to quasi-race motors with the little turbo, and it is truly miraculous! I am stunned you go that fast on your mods. How the hell can you go that fast with the stock IC and pipes??!!

Have you ever dyno'd your ride? I know you can figure it using your weight and speed, just wondering if you did. Do you run on race gas at the track? Do you have any trouble with knock?

Sorry for all the questions but I can't pass up asking someone who's been there and done that.

How'd you like a new pet project grooming a protege?!;) Me, not that POS Toyota!

Congrats on the results :thumb: truly awesome!

Rick - '91 GSX slower than Phils car!!

Austin and Rick....thanks for the support and words. Let me see if I can answer all of your questions.

1. VP C16 race gas always, no Sunoco or CAM2 crap
2. I have not dynoed the car yet, I have been too busy down here as of yet, but, it's coming, I estimate between 255-270@ the wheels.
3. Knock-- yes....I have fuel cut disabled in the ECU, essentially, no protection, without fuel control such as an AFC, I really have no way to combat this, unless I want to pull timing, which will slow me down. Anyway, the last time at the strip and my first time down here in Maryland.....@20psi only, I ran [email protected] right off the bat, then it got dark, traction [email protected] boost. Then someone reminded me to lift the headlight for some cold air.....which I do sometimes....well, that was enough cold air to cause knock at the top of 4th gear running through the traps.....still ran 12.19...but, @109.....got lucky, no damage....so, yes, if its cold enough, knock is an issue. So, until I make some adjustments in the form of fuel, I wont be back to the track, so I will dyno as the car sits now and then make adjustments and re-dyno.

Weight:

1. A/C removed-all components
2. P/S removed
3. front and rear bumpers gone
4. carbon fiber hood
5. heat shields in driveshaft tunnel removed
6. Sparco seat and harness
7. no passenger seat and all factory seatbelts removed
8. rear seats and belts gone
9. over 35 pounds of sound deadening removed
10. Racing Hart CP035 wheels 9.6 lbs. each
11. Z-Speed lightweight lugs--all of them weigh about as much as 3 stock lugs
12. dust sheilds on brake rotors

That's the bulk of it...as you can see, it's not a full street trim vehicle, and isn't presented as such....

13. no stereo equip or speakers

..and I have more weight to pull out......the car is strictly for speed in a straight line...I mean, it handles well, but it's realy for the drags. In the future, I will bring the car back towards a full street car, adding a passenger Sparco.......oh, I will be adding some weight back in when I put the cage in very soon............you know 11.99 most tracks require a cage to run. So, guys......whatever you want to know or need help with...let me know. And of course, I'll keep everyone posted of any new developments with the car.

See ya,

Phil1320

...max boost ever was 23.5.....when I ran the 12.02, 12.05 the first time.

down here I hit 12.05 at only 20psi......cooler...

Phil1320

Well thanks very much Phil, its cool that your free and open about this info. i would think tht most people would like to cover up their "secrets". I know your car is light and all but you must be one heck of a driver :thumb: 12.1@109 is great regrdless of wieght. Great stuff ;)

Austin

.......by the way , your car looks killer in that color with the dark wheels and FMIC. I've tried to find that color Talon and never found one for sale...what year is yours...'93???

Phil1320

I have not dynoed the car yet, but I estimate between 255-270@ the wheels.
It's gotta be beter than that. I dyno'd mine at 252whp with a 35 knock count and I'd bet I could only do a mid 13. That was Peak HP though. You may have a much flatter curve than mine, especially with my knock. According to the DSM Horsepower Calculator (http://www.dsm.org/tools/calchp.htm) you're putting down about 322 HP. That's probably a little on the high side just by the way it calculates but still awesome. I'll bet the Turbo and Injector guys say you couldn't possibly do it!
its cool that your free and open about this info. i would think tht most people would like to cover up their "secrets".
I agree with Austin!! Thanks! It sure does alot more good to share the info rather than ridicule and bash people.

When you say you ran, 23.5 Pounds, was that what it was set to and then it falls off at higher rpms or is that what it falls to, or does it even fall off? Also do you shift early to keep the boost from falling off or do you just get better results that way?

Thanks!

...23.5 rock solid through the traps in 4th gear. In third gear, boost falls to around 18-19 even if I'm set at 20, but just about the time it is doing this I shift up to 4th, so I don't feel there is much loss there. The reason I shift out so quick is that the 14b makes no power up high, even the 20G turbo starts to fall off at 7000. Shifting too late when you are out of power means you're losing ET as opposed to being in the powerband in the next gear accelerating swiftly. Every car is different, but generally you can feel when this occurs. It's just my experience and shifting later nets slower ET's. I am in 3rd gear accelerating past 65 MPH in 4 seconds flat or less. Maybe I am putting down more than I think...we'll see and I'll let you know. As soon as I can get it on the dyno.

Phil1320

ps--I have no prob helping anyone out...I want us all to go faster, that means more domestics and Hondas we slam! Well, not like they are hard to beat!

Phil, I assume that when you removed your bumpers you kept the stock covers. What did you bolt them to or how did you support the covers? Is it delicate? I mean would you knock something out of whack if you bumped into it in the garage or put your foot up on it?

Rick - '91 GSX:dsm: Going on a diet...around the Holidays!

...th erear supports itself using stock mounting points...the front I have an aluminum front bumper cover support....the rear is sturdy, the front is less than optimal, but it works........

Phil1320

ps- I would not remove your bumpers if you drive your car everyday...it is way dangerous......
