New Bedford,
ok so i just picked up a 92 Tsi awd for its 6-bolt motor. i am going to install it in my VR4 that has a blown motor. the new motor has great compression, and runs good, but i just want to freshen it up a bit while its out so i don't have to worry about it, i want it reliable...

was planning on doing this:

OEM timing kit with pulleys, tensioner

Topline water pump

full tune-up

clean out the oil pickup

new gaskets for mostly everything except the head gasket.

maybe even a new front seal

now do i have to change my front case/oil pump i don't understand why we need a whole new case, or can i just replace the oil pump gears? if i do BSEK do i need a new oil pump/case or just buy a gasket? i am not sure what oil pressure the car had as the gauge was not working

i have a set a ARP's i was also planning on putting in without removing the head...

thanks for any advice ahead of time.

The reason why you would want to replace the oil pump is from wear. The gears themselves don't wear too much but the case can. The case is replaced in rebuilds and sometimes people will replace it when doing eliminating the balance shafts.

Asking on link isn't enough for you huh? :p

Anyway...you may not HAVE to replace the case or gears. Get out your service manual (you do have one right?) and measure the specs. If none of it is out of spec then you're good to go. I'm in the same boat as you right now. I'm swapping in a known running motor but I want to make sure everything is taken care of maintenance wise before I drop it in. Just check the specs on everything and don't forget to pack the oil pump. There are some great articles in the tech section worth checking out.

My main question, if you're putting in ARP's why not replace the head gasket at the same time?

yes i have a manual not factory though, haynes or some shit, i haven't even used it yet, there so much tech out there, i haven't needed it.

i am not sure if i am going to put it the ARP's yet, and if i do, it will be without removing the head, i did it on my last motor that way, but a month later the timing belt let go, so i am not sure if it had any effects to the head gasket, i never noticed anything.

and your right i just want to make sure this motor is ready to rock! it has a like new water pump and gates belt, but the tensioner and pulleys look very old, so everything will be done!
