What are the advantages/disadvantages to porting and clipping a new turbo?

i read somewhere that clipping the turbo is bad for it and makes it so that the turbo doesnt have as much material on it to be pushed by the exhaust gases going around the housing. i believe it was some company. i may not be %100 right, but i would definately research it very well before you have your turbo clipped.

as for porting, i heard it was good cause you have a wider opening for the turbo to blow air through, but then again, i may be wrong. definately research these items.

Porting allows more air to travel thru and smoothes the airflow out so its not as rough I believe

Clipping a turbo induces more turbo lag, but the trade off that you get more top end.
Porting helps by way of better flow. Less restriction.

I know this is a very very old thread (5+ years!) but is there any more information about clipping specifically? I mean, how do you know if you need a 7 degree or 15 degree clip? I have a big 16g (not evo III, just a standard big 16g) with a td05H wheel and a 7cm^2 housing. I hate how the turbo falls off at like 5500 - 6000 rpms.

Clipping may or may not help you out. Alot more to power dropping off at high rpms than just the turbine wheel restriction. Buschur did a before and after dyno comparison on a late model EVO with & without a clip over at "evolutionm". Was not the big difference he expected and in fact hurt low & midrange torque. I'm fanatical about improving my topend, and I still won't clip the wheel. I've run a 10* clip on a small 16g and topend felt fantastic, but it always was a little laggier than it should have been. I wouldn't do it unless I were going for a record.
