a couple questions....can someone tell me the differences between 16g..18g 20g and t3 turbos.....(like what are the best uses outa each...street/track?) and what are the differences in horsepower between each turbo given that you have the bare minimum for turbo upgrades...bigger exhaust boost controller fuel injectors fuel line intake n so on n so on.....also what are prices for each of them? thanks

A little research goes a long way but here is a good start for you.

16g - 300hp $500
Big 16g - 350hp $550 (or so)
18g - waste of time and money
20g - 400hp $999.00
After that the prices and the horsepower just go up, and so does the need for supporting mods.

Just FYI I got all the prices and hp numbers from slowboyracing.com

In my opinion anything bigger than a Big16g ported and clipped is starting to get into the drag racing area as the boost isn't going to come on until later in the revs.

Good luck.

go 20g. You get all you need for the money you spend. Very nice spool and pulls really hard.

Yes, although still trying to get my tuning sorted out this is an amazing snail...

If you are worried about breaking, you shouldn't be modding your DSM ;) I'd look at the Evo3 16G, I think a few shops are selling them in combination with the Evo3 O2 housing and exhaust manifold. And I have seen some good numbers out of it, especially for a turbo that size.

I have heard from quite a few others(myself included), go right to the 20g if you are thinking about the Big16g. For a lot of people, the Big16g just wasn't enough. If you are going to do the job, do it once. IMO!

I would like to see a big 16g pump 400hp. No, really I would. I'd throw my snail away if I see some numbers like that.

Bigger turbos make more power, no doubt. But if you are worried more about breaking than going fast, like the guy I replied to, a bigger turbo isn't for you. I'll stick with my 50 trim though, if it breaks it just means its time to upgrade something else :thumb:

Things don't break on their own. Its all a manner of how you treat the car and how often you beat on it.

But things go to hell much quicker with a big turbo than with a small one. Plus certain things tend to wear out much quicker at higher HP levels. If he is worried about this that much, he should stick with something that isn't going to be making as much power.

Am I missing the funny part? Do you not agree about some things wearing out faster when you are making more power? Clutches are something that comes to mind right off the bat.

Maybe you are disagreeing about things going to hell quicker with a bigger turbo? If you have a tuning problem(are running lean, have too much knock etc), things will go to hell quicker if you are stuffing more air into the cylinders, generating more cylinder pressure, etc.

Is it possible to do it right, and not blow it up with a bigger turbo? Sure it is, probably a few thousand people on this site have done so. But if this guy is asking about reliability and breakage, its pretty safe to assume that he is on the beginning of his learning curve about tuning these cars. So something that isn't as big of a step probably is a good idea.
