To heat shield or not to heat shield?

That is the question......:)
I see so many photos with the heat shield not on the manifold. How do you keep from frying everything near it? Is there a heat shield for a t3/t4 manifold? Can someone help answer these questions?

No there is no heat shield for the T3/T4 manifold. You can just thermal wrap it. Rob(Black95GSX) has done this to his manifold.
 
There's 2 things you can do for the T3/T4 manifolds... you can have it ceramic coated, if you get the right stuff, it will last for a very long time and not fall apart. Problem is, it costs $175-200 to get the 'good' stuff that works.


I spent $25 and got the "header wrap" fiberglass style wrap. WEAR GLOVES when you do it, thick leather gloves. Otherwise your hands will itch for a very long time.

It works great, I can actually "touch" the manifold after running the car for hours. Also lowers intake temps due to less heat in the engine compartment (keeps heat in manifold).

I thought about the wrap, but some say it may overheat and crack the manifold. Plenty of racers use it, so I think I will try the wrap.

The people that complain about the wrap overheating the manifold and cracking it, probably purchased "cheep" manifolds to begin with.
First and foremost, I'm useing this as a generalization... I realize some high quality manifolds may crack... and it has nothing to do with the building of the manifold... just "luck"


A lot of tubular manifolds that crack, crack because they are too thin. I feel confident wrapping my SFP manifold, because they used thick runners. So far, no problems with my SFP manifold, I've been extremely satisified with it.
