Since Ford 302 internals are crazy cheap here, I was wondering...

If it is possible to bore out a 4G64 bottom end from the stock 86.5 mm to the 101.6 mm ones found in the Ford 302 4V engines.

Also, what about rods? Would those work too?

Thanks

I honestly don't think that amount of risky boring is worth the "cheapness" of any pistons.

I'm sorry.. I meant forged pistons and rods..

What's the max that a 4G64 can safely be bored to?

Fords 5.0 (302ci) rod length is only 5.4" as opposed to the 4G63's 5.9" rod length. The shorter rod length would make a terrible rod/stroke ratio.

By going with a shorter rod, you would automatically require a custom piston which would totally negate any gains from trying go a cheaper route. Also, the main bearing sizes are different, with the fords being 2.1" and the 4G63 being a 1.89" I believe, thus requiring a custom crank, or very large custom rod bearings.

Next would be the width of the rod at the mains. I'm not sure if they would be the correct width. The pin diameter is different, but since you'd have to get custom pistons anyway, just add that in with the order.

As for boring out an engine 15mm larger, I don't think that would be possible without some serious sleeving of the block, and even then I'm sure it would be too large. Even if you could, you'd have to get a custom made head gasket for the larger bore size and possible water jacket relocation.

As you can clearly see, there is much more to it than just stuffing/swapping engine components around. Usually (not always) the cost in the end far outweighs the means.

damn, he beat me to it

like he said, your going to need so many custom parts that it wouldnt be anywhere near worth it.

ford rods will not work, using dsm rods would require a custom piston, which negates whatever you would have saved with a regular piston

i dont think its even possible to bore 15mm over on a 4g64, if you did the ammount of block between your cylinders would be reduced to next to nothing

just save yourself the trouble and buy the magnus, with the ammount of torque and power it has over a 4g63 you really dont need anymore
put a big turbo on a magnus 4g64 at about 30 psi and you will forget you ever had this crazy idea

Thanks guys, I just had that idea pop into my head.

Thanks for all the responses.

Not that it'll make a difference in the practicality of using ford internals, but FYI the 5.0L engines came with forged internals from 79-92. With '87-92 being exactly the same. The '93+ blocks were changed to hypereutectic.

Just thought I'd add that to answer RuBiCaNT5X's post.
