Dumped Exhaust

I was wondering if dumping the exhaust on my (1990 fwd plymouth Laser)dsm would help it or hender performance in any way?please tell me any info on this subject if anyone can thanks! I have a stock turbo, K&N , and the BCS mod.

Dump your exhaust huh?.....i dont think "dumping" your exhaust would get you anywhere but f**kin arrested........you could maybe try and running bigger piping instead of using that .25 inch piping you got on the car.......oh by the way......where did you plan on dumping this exhaust?.......in the dumpster?....!:laugh:

Our cars are surprisingly very loud with no exhaust and I don't think they sound very good unless you have a huge turbo and cams. When I got new exhaust I started it open manifold, open downpipe and then before I put the muffler on. I have webcams, it sounded alright without the muffler but I didn't like it any other way. It up to you though and I guess if you can go open headers with a V8 and not get a ticket you could do it with a 4-cylinder. You would most likely see some performance gains.

You'll lose torque but gain horse power. In other words you'll notice it sluggish and less responsive prior to when the turbo kicks in. Once the turbo kicks in you'll notice a big improvement.

Actually i don't think you will lose to much torque at all. That applies to n/a cars. The less back pressure you have, the faster the turbo can spool.

This is true, except N/A cars don't want backpressure either, it's the scavenging (sp?) effect that they lose that effects their power not backpressure. It's a common mis-conception.

There's a guy on DSMtalk that I talked to about his "dumped" exhaust... well, actually... he ran an exhaust cutout. He said it sounded like, "I'm going to kill you," with it open. The cutout was after the downpipe and before the cat, muffler, etcetc.

You'll probably have crazy spike when boost hits but only very briefly so nothing to really worry about fuel-wise with the BCS still in there. No problems with loss of torque since turbos provide more than enough backpressure and you get wicked faster spool. No restriction from having an exhaust either... but it will be insanely LOUD! A lot of people drop the exhaust on the drag strip for those reasons. Heck, NA folks do it too...

Unless you have an enlarged wastegate, and ported 02 housing expect boost creep. And alot of it.

If you live in a lower elevation you won't notice any loss of torque. But areas like colorado, utah, etc. It will be very noticable.

yes its worth it! i picked up 2 psi of boost by running the downpipe open.....just added a lot of tire spin though at the track

if you still have the stock cat it will be worth even more....I would just do it at the track though as it will be loud

all you basically have to do is just remove the cat and run the car like that

I'm talking from actual experience. I use to pull my cat at the track and run open past my 2.5" mandrel dp. There was a very noticable loss at the low end. But it also added 3~4 mph to my trap speed . The loss of low end was acceptable and so since I have gone full 3" catless turbo back.
