Wheneer I start my car, or its jsut ideling,an awful noise comes from the belt side. Its the worse noise ever. It makes the car sounds like its about to fall apart. But when you start driving and get past 2,000 rpm, it stops everytime. All i was wondering if you guys think its anything serious. theres a big crack in the timing belt cover. Not the top cover but the one that actually covers all the greas and belt all the way around. Just wanted an opinion. thanks

You'll have to give us an idea of what sort of noise it is. Is it a squeal, whine, grind, thump, or a rubber band sort of twang?

1.) DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR.

2.) Probably causes are: water pump bearing, timing belt tensioner bearing, or idler bearing. Loss of any of these will grenade the motor (or, at least the head) when it takes the timing belt(s) out with it.

3.) Remaining suspect is the harmonic balancer, or harmonic damper. It's the crank pulley assembly, there's a thick rim around the pulley which is bonded onto the hub with a rubber strip. It _can_ take out a timing belt when it fails, but not so certainly as (2.).

did it just start with the cold? my guess is alternator belt. if it is, you can't fix it, learn to love it ;)

i would say its more of a raddle sound than anything. But it goes away right when it hits 2,000. But i still dont know

Rattle sound and the lower timing belt cover is cracked? It sounds like the cover is hitting something. I'd replace the cover, there are a lot of important parts under there.

My car does this too, but it is more like a growling sound and it goes away at 3000 rpm and stops after its warm. If it is a bearing going bad why would it go away after 3K??
Thanks

I have the same exact problem. Loud rattle from timing belt area from 1000rpm to 3000rpm only when coolant temps are low. Once it's warmed up it goes away completly. I checked this issue out when I first noticed it (8,000 miles ago!) and could not find the problem. It's now starting to really bother me so I'm going to investigate further. I'll let you know what I find. I suspect a bad oil pump but I don't know where to even start looking. I am glad I'm not the only one with the annoying rattle:)

Feel free to chime in if you have this problem or fixed this problem.

Timing belt tensioner. It allows the arm of the tensioner to bounce up and down rapidly on the belt tensioner hydraulic rod assembly.

DittWTF!!nce the fluid is warm,it pressurizes some. This is were a perfect belt adjustment saves your motor. If the TBT is or was a little more loose, then this thread would be about changing valves in the head.
