Calgary,
The Haynes manual says to pull out the exhaust manifold and take the turbo out from the top. The "how to" articles at VFAQ say to pull the down pipe off and pull the turbo out the bottom and not to remove the exhaust manifold.

I am doing my install this weekend and it doesn't matter to me which way I do it but if one way is easier I may as well go that route. If anyone know the easiest way, please let me know.

Just take out the turbo. It's no problem. Removing the cooling fan's gives you plenty of room to work with.

When you remove the manifold, there is always the chance of snapping the studs holding it on....pain in the ass. However, if you are installing a Big28, I was under the impression it is ported for a 7cm gasket. This would mean you should take the manifold off and get it ported anyway. The old FP T28/28 I have had a stander 6cm inlet, so there was no need to remove the manifold.

Have fun. Its a good turbo.

I removed the radiator because its 4 more bolts, then I dropped the turbo from the bottom and because I was porting my manifold I removed that too. Then I bolted the turbo, manifold, water lines, and oil lines on and then put it on as one bringing it up from the bottom.

When I helped a buddy of mine do his, we took the manifold off. We just couldn't get the turbo out the bottom past his downpipe, even with the fans removed. Remember that you will want to replace the one manifold-to-turbo stud with a bolt, so have that in hand when you start.

I did the same thing, worked great for me!

funny, i took mine out from the bottem, but i didn't have any help to put it back, i took off the upper radiator hose, and wus able to squeaze it down from the top believe it or not, and i didn't take the manifold off. i had room enough with just the driver side fan removed.

Take off the 3 bolts. Take off the stud nut and then get vise grips and twist out the stud this way you can drop the turbo down and have enough room to manuver it around the front motor mount. And who cares about the stud, cut that damn thing in half b/c you should be replacing it with a bolt anyway.
