818 - 909,
im thinking of building up my engine but im afraid to waste my money on my 7 bolt, but id also be more afraid to convert to a 6 bolt and have it built, only to end up having it crankwalk  now would that not be the pits or what??? There are a lot of threads about 7 bolt that crankwalk, lets hear some 6 bolt with crankwalk stories...

The only 6 bolt I've ever heard of crankwalking, and I mean EVER is Sean Caron's.

Other than that, that's it.

Any engine can get crankwalk. Its overhyped anyway, *most* 7 bolts don't crankwalk or wouldn't if they were taken care of. Mines got 126K on it and its within tolerences. I plan to build a 6 bolt motor just to have a stronger motor and avoid the boogie man, I mean crankwalk. :)

My engine walked 2 days ago.. Very well taken care of.

I've been reading and researching a lot these past 2 days, and it seems that everyone seems to be pointing to too much play between the Main bearing cap and the main bearing cap bolts.. Now, I've been tearing my block apart these last few days in search of answers. (no i can't cut the block in to slices like some others have done) All of the bearings were in place, but they had horizontal scoring from the crank moving.. What caused the bearings to fail.. On some advice, I cut the head of one of the main cap bolts and threaded it into the main cap.. I was shocked at how much space there was around the threads of the bolt / main cap... If all this pressure is exerted on the main cap, it is sure to move and shift with that kind of space there..

So, I am going to attempt to put the steel dowel inserts into the main bearing cap with some arp studs (with all new bearings of course) to see if I can't get this 7bolt not to walk the second time around.. I'll tell you in 50k miles if it walks again (most walked engines that have new bearings in them seem to walk within 7k miles.)

Most people seem to think that 6bolt blocks that are rebuilt walk b/c of incorrect specs between bearings, and an incorrectly aligned main cap that shifts under pressure..

what do you mean "if they were taken care of"?? theres not much you can do other than to change oil at proper intervals, crankshafts dont have any maintenance procedures.

use GOOD oil, and do it oftin.. many people (who had the car before you) change the damn oil every 5k and throw in some gas station 10-w30 garbage.. and crap like that..

We have had two 1g's crankwalk out here in Hawaii this last year. One just had 24,000 miles on it since a rebuild. I pulled the motor and checked it out. Come to find out they reused the bearings when the guy had it rebuilt. As for the other one I am not sure just why it cranked walked.
Just to clear the air a little. Just because you put a 6 bolt motor in the car does not mean you will not get crankwalk. Yes the 6 bolt motor has a lesser chance of walking, but anything can happen. The odds are in your favor (that it will not crankwalk) if you have a 6 bolt. Just food for thought.

BTW what are the Temps around the States today. It is a nice 85 degrees here!

I babied my car and used Mobil 1 every 2.5k miles with a mitsu filter, on a stock clutch and the car walked at 4#k.

dont forget that the 7-bolt is even more prone to spinning a rod bearing.

I got a brand new short-block from satan and gave it the same treatment as before and it spun a rod bearing in less then 10k.

Now I went with a 6-bolt.
