As many of you know, I have a dead cylinder on number one. I finished taking off my head last night, and lo and behold, I have a bent valve.

One valve. Not two, but just ONE valve.

I took the head to a machine shop this morning, and he supported my theory that it's no way that if the belt was off, that the piston would only break/bend ONE valve. If the piston is going to smack valves, it's going to be both of them, and even more, on two cylinders. If the belt was off/jumped, there'd be more valves gone.

There was only a tiny mark of the piston where it hit, but other than that, the piston looks fine, no play or abnormal clearance compared to the others.

I'm trying to see if I can get Noyan to at least cover the charges to get this head rebuild.

Anyone?

Anyway the guide could be screwed up, and the valve did not lift back up into the head like it should. Like it was wedged open by something.
Only thing I can think of, because like you said both valves woudl be bent if timing was off.

There are two things that usually happen to the head in this situation...The valve guides sometimes get gummed up for one reason or another and the valve cannot return quickly enough, or sometimes the valves just break. In your case it sounds like the guide had a problem. either way whats done is done. just be thankful you didnt bend all your exhaust valves like me ;)
