ok i have heard alot of things between internal vs external. external's are suppose to be used are bigger turbo's to help eliminate boost creep. but now they make big garrett turbo's with the internal wastgate. is it just people are to cheap to buy the more expensive one and that is why they sell it? is there a noticeable difference between the too? I am looking at a new 50trim/stage III/.63 AR and its external, but they also sell the internal. what to do.....

was up just to answer your ? about are people too cheap to buy the full garret kit, well some people are not rich like everyone else and work a 8 hour day to pay for what they want like me, i just turned 18 and have to pay for everything with my car because my parants dont suport my racing (what parent would), LOL , on to the next thing i do have a t/3t/4 garret from agp (must have saved long) and it is external wg, with bigger turbos i wouldnt get internal because of boost creep, i mean who wants to spend that money and looking for some realy power but still have to worry about creep, if your going to go bigger do it right and get a external wg with external dump, its loud sounds mean and most of all eliminates creep and scares them 69 camaros.

am i right when i say that external wastegates are street-legal if they are dumped internally into downpipe, as opposed to externally...thats what i gathered from dsms.

Externals can bypass more air.

However, internals are improving. The newer oversize flappers are working quite well.

i have an atr external on my big 16g and it is great i have raced alot of ppl and they all comment on my car after 3500rpms when the wastegate pens and it just gets vicious. Its awsomebut word to the wise make sure your dump tube is mounted good mine feel off and i blew a hole threw my 2g radiator now i have a 1g n/a radiator in there it works great. LOL

big wastegates are made to bypass more air. You need a big wastegate when running a big turbo with low boost. The only time i can think of needing external besides that is when you're running really HIGH boost like 25+ psi because a lot of times the high boost will blow the wastegate flapper wide open...

Boostcreep is caused usually when the wastegate cant bypass enough exaust to maintain the set boost, so it just keeps CREEPING up. Either run more boost or get a bigger wastegate.

Overall, I'd say that externals perform more consistently. The only reason I wouldn't go external is because I don't want cops messing with me when they ask me to pop the hood. I want my car to be as street legal as possible. Unless you'll be running high boost levels with a huge turbo, an internal gate will be adequate for 90% of the DSM crowd. Hell, a Big16g will be adequate for 90% of the DSM crowd, but big turbos are like drugs in our community.... they just keep callin us. :)

Chris, I didnt even know you drove your car, what with all that time you waste on your computer :p ...Anywho, how is the who BADSM revival going? Are they going to update the webpage or what?

dont take offense, but that was really ricey IM -H- O ...

We just got done saying that internal gates work just fine, but you say that external gates are "so much better"...Could you elaborate on this please? Not saying you are wrong or right, its just always good to back up a statement with some good evidence...

and the fact that it sounds good doesnt help the argument much...

can sound as ricey as you want it to sound to you

alls i know is a 2g gsx round here was stock, a few weeks later had 3inch turboback, opened up intake, t28, bov, mbc, and wastegate, and went FROOOOOOM past my happy ass, and thats about all i know

but it had a wastegate, and ran harder and blah.

ahh i c. Well, the gate would not make a car any faster. The mods you listed were all very basic, and a car with those mods and a stock turbo wouldnt benefit from an external gate. Even a FP Green is just fine with an internal gate (up to 23 or so psi anyways). So, basically, Im going to hafta say your statement about the external gate being way better than internal is a bit off...

Just one think to piont out. When it comes to internal wastegates the size of the flapper does not mean as much as the port that it covers. You can get a 39mm flapper, but if have the stock 3/4" port it will not work better than the stock one. When getting a turbo with an internal wastegate make sure to ask what the port size is. The stock is around 3/4". most enlarged ones are 1" and the biggest ones are around 1.25".

Just my .02 cents, every single turbo you find on an vehicle other than small vehicles is externally wastegated. True we run more air, but for simplicity of adjustment and repair, you can't beat an external WG. Say if my wastegate malfunctions, I simply buy a replacement, remove three bolts and the hose, attach the new one, and I am done.

I know I am not a DSM owner, but things like turbos are kinda cross-field mods, so I chip in where I can;)

Will
