small 16G + 450cc ?

Now with my motor apart rebuilding the bottom end because i melted a piston :) I am planning on getting a ported small 16G 7cm housing. Also i just picked up a ported 2G exhaust manifold and getting ARP head studs as my addition with the rebuild. How much boost should I run safely on the street with stock 450cc injectors and 255lph fuel pump?

Id like to see the setup of those with small 16g and stock injectors.

dont wanna melt another piston again :D
 
I run 17psi on the street and my temps get right too 1600 now in 4th thats another story i really dont want to look at the guage past 110mph but i dont go 110+ all the time so i dont care. Get an egt gauge and kinda use that as a safe boost setting. Or since your a 1g i would get a logger and watch you knock count.
 
If your temp gets as high as 1600* @ 17psi then you should turn the boost down to 15-16psi. Ever logged your car at 17psi? how many knocks are you getting?

I was getting 43 knocks and as low as 3* of timing pulled when i melted a piston at 17-18psi on 4th gear. Ill just watch the knock count on the logger. mid 30s or below of knocks ill consider on the 'safe side'
 
you forget one thing i have a 2g and the only thing i can go off of is egt and o2's I think im getting some knock but not that much. And like i said the 1600 is at the end of the 1/4 witch is pushing the limit but your right 15 or so or even 16psi would be good but then again no matter what i turn the boost too it goes to 1600.... unless its like 10
 
invest in a dsm link, its the best upgrade u could possibly get for a 2g, u can datalog and make fuel adjustments like an afc, imo everyone with a 2g should have one
as for the topic creator, get a data logger, the software is only like 150 and u can get a palm for under 50 bucks on ebay, that way u can see ur knock and how much ur ecu is retarding ur timing, and properly tune with the new turbo
 
I do have a datalogger. Matter of fact, i was logging my car when i melted my piston. Showed 43counts of knock and pulled 3* of timing.

On my car with small 16G, stock injectors, stock FPR, and Walbro 255 low pressure. At 16psi I was hitting as high as 105% duty cycle, and mid twenties for knock. Turning it down to 14psi made a big difference in knock and the car actually went faster too.
 
14psi sounds pretty low!! LOL. but whatever makes the car happier and faster is good. Ill play around with the boost setting and read my knocks.

How do you like your small 16g over your 14b?

We have some what different setups so you might get a little bit different results, just do like you said and use your logger to monitor whats going on.
 
do you feel the boost kick hard at a certain rpm on the 16g? unlike the 14b's ?
 
My 16g does everything better than the 14b, but like I said the 14b was sick. The blades on the compressor wheel where all f'd up, the wastegate had some bad cracks around the flapper, and my exhaust mani had some bad cracks, I upgraded the mani at the same time as the turbo. So I can't really compare the two.

At least get a pocketlogger so you can log your timing. True you can't see knock, but you'll have a good clue when its happening if your timing is getting pulled.
 
I'm currently running a 16g with stock injectors. I recently put in a Supra intercooler and the car felt slower, maybe because my injectors were past 100% duty cycle and my timing was getting cut to <15. I don't seem to be getting significant knock - at least from what I see on my TMO gauge (I use Sunoco 94 always). I turned down the boost from 17 to 15 and the car felt quite a bit faster. Bigger injectors and MAFT this weekend!

i dont know about ur 14b but mine kicks in hard at around 4000, very hard when compared to a t25, i mean not hard like some of the bigger turbos but hard enough to pull ur head back at 4000 if i hold the gas down at 3000
as for sunoco 94 octane, dont u just love that stuff? my car runs great on it, its the only thing i ever put in my car, chances are it has a little more octane then 94, i see lots of suped up v8s filling up with it, my friend with a blown mustang says his car runs great on it too, and 94 is a little low for his set up
 
are any of you using any kind of fuel control? i dont see anyone talking about it....seems like you are just either turning your boost up or down and seeing what your 02s and knock count and egts are ? but youarent doing anything without adjusting fuel. so are you using an AFC or something ? if not you probably should if you want to tune the car .....
 
On my A/T AWD 1G (daily driver), I'm running a big 16G with a set of M/T 450cc injectors. I had my OE 13G take a sh*t on me right after I got the car (w/ 32K on it), so I upgraded to the B16G. In doing so, I got a 2G Exh Man and Evo3 O2 Housing while I was waiting for the turbo to arrive... Ported the hell out of everything and put it all in at once. -Still OE head & bottom end. I already had 2.5" Turbo back exhaust.

First impression was Fricken Awsome! (well for an A/T it WAS!!), but I soon noticed that EGTs were getting up there, and I was running kinda lean (via my O2 volts), knock counts were vitually not affected until this 2 sizes-larger-than-stock turbo hit full spool. (Still in the ghetto stages, I was using the Knock LED for knock detection).

Now, still without any REAL fuel management, I am runing these 450s with a M/T FPR and a rewired OE FP. I ended up running pig-rich (O2s were usually around .92-98 volts). I ended up hacking the 1G MAS's lower honeycomb section to lean it out just a bit. -That worked.

According to my stand-alone HKS IPM, my A/T ECU's injector pulse doesn't exceed 75% @ 15lbs boost... At 18lbs in high boost mode, it'll go 85%. -According to HKS, 85% is the top of the injector's accurate duty cycle, so that's what I tuned it for. Sometimes I get some creep that might get the boost up to 20lbs, but that is my own fault for not getting the waist gate flapper upgraded to 34mm when I got the turbo. In this case, the IPM will read 90-95% duty cycle.

55k miles later, it's still running great, new Alamo SMIC & IC piping made it even more responsive with less knock (still got the LED). That 16G is fully spooled by 3700 RPM. That was a big difference from the 13G (but it was on it's way out when I got it). It Pulls very hard in the 4-5K range, REALLY hard after a kickdown from 3rd or OD.

Ring lands, dunno -haven't seen 'em. quarter sized holes melted in pistons?-Only on my buddy's 2G, rod/main berings?-no clue. No deposits on my plugs.

Haven't blown anything up yet... Not even that damn A/T
