what needs to be done to a 4g63 imported from japan so that itll pass smog in the US? (more specifically CA). a guy i was talking to at the mitsu dealer said it needs "labor intensive work" in order for it to satisfy CA smog requirements.
 
The guy at the Mits dealer is an idiot, at best. EGR is required, and I don't know but what a Test Station might let that go, if your emissions numbers are otherwise in-spec- which witha cat, they're liable to be.
 
Is there a JDM 7 bolt? If not, (assuming he's swapping into his 2G) then he's doing a 6-bolt swap. If the 2G head, intake, and all of the 2G emissions controls are retianed, there shouldn't be any problem passing a smog inspection, or a visual inspection, as the tech will most likely not even notice the minor block differences. However, if the JDM head and intake are used, there will be complications making all of the emissions lines routed. Has anyone passed Emissions in a 2G with a full 1G/JDM swap? We don't have VET here in Lexington, so I wouldn't know.
 
Put on a 1G Intake manifold/throttlebody on the JDM motor. 2G one won't fit.

Boom. You now have a USDM motor.

If you want to be really good, make sure your timing is set to 5 degrees for the base.

Hell, you can even put your ratty 2G Valve cover on (they fit fine) and I highly doubt any tech, unless they are well versed with the 4G63, will think it's anything but a stock motor.
 
LOL, y would u put a 2g head on a jdm engine? that will take all those extra jdm horses right away, if he was going to keep the crappy 2g head he would probally keep the whole 2g motor
like cat sith said, bolt a 1g intake mani to the jdm head and it will appear stock to anyone who hasnt actually done or seen a jdm 4g63 swap before, and if the tech does notice chances are he is into the import tuning sceen himself and wouldnt care
