i've purchase some hks cam gears for my 2g motor. i've taken it to the shop to have them installed, and the mechanic has advised that the intake cam has the sensor in the way, and it can't be installed. how do i get this to work? i've done a search and can not find it.

i guess they aren't too keen of a shop... try a shop thats dealt with DOHC motors before... its basicly changing your timing belt with the addition of putting 2 new cam gears on.

You are a vendor? it's not that easy. the cam angle sensor on the 2g is on the end of the inlet cam. the plate for the sensor is quite wide, and when putting the hks cam gear on, the sensor plate hits the inner side of the cam gear, preventing it from being put on. it would be a bolt on for a 1g/vr4 motor, but for the 2g it's not. or at least not that i can see. where are you 2g guys with the 2 hks cam gears? there's got to be somone out there?

Here's what the plate for the sensor looks like;

And here's what the HKS Cam Gears look like both inside and outside.

When matching the the hks cam gear to the inlet cam, the plate for the sensor hits the 3 bolts on the hks cam gear, and also hits the inner blue surround of the hks cam gear. any ideas?

ok i've spent the last couple of hours searching around and found that the 95/96 model 4g63t's have the sensor in the way, as read here -

http://www.dsm-performance.com/product_info.php?cPath=30&products_id=161

I then had a look to see if there was a way i could not use this sensor setup and instead either try a 1g CAS setup and found this -

http://www.magnusmotorsports.com/1g2g.htm

Is it possible for the car to run if i try to rewire it to use the 1G CAS method instead with the 95ecu i have?

Is it possible for me to change the 95-96 style CAS to the 97-99 CAS retaining the 95 ecu?

Or, don't use the cam gears? My car has cam gears on it (just set to 0) and have talked to a couple of DSM specialists about getting them adjusted/tuned. Both places recommended taking them, pitching them in the trash and putting stock back on. They say the gains are very minimal so it's not worth the risk of having them slip. Since mine have been fine for about 20,000 miles I'm just going to leave them on, but have no plans to get them adjusted...

Yeah it should work, is your head setup to mount on a 1g cas? I dont remember if it has studs on the passenger side or not.

Also the 1g cas might cause some misfire issues, I would say not to do it unless you had dsmlink. It would probbaly be cheaper to find a 97 ecu and 1g cam sensor, I have heard they dont misfire.

i have dyno proof on my mechanic's dyno that they do make a difference, as shown on an sr20det nissan s14 200sx and other nissans here in australia, that they do. as much as 39kw at the wheels which is definitely not something to sneer at. i will be posting the difference at boost pressure level once they're installed, to show that there is, as all i can find on here and 'talk, is that they're not worth it.

yep, when i first got the swap done 3 years ago, we didn't have a wiring diagram, and couldn't get the fuel pump to work properly, so my mechanic used the existing sensor from the sonata, which is like the 1G style, to run that. So my motor actually is using both sensors, and two ecu's believe it or not. (one sonata, one 95 mitsu) which is fairly unique. he is going to have a look at it tomorrow and see how it turns out. if anyone has some more suggestions, please input, work starts again in about 9 hours from now.

Don't get me wrong, I know they're good for many cars. Toyota 3S-GTE with big cams typically has good gains with adjustable cam gears as well... Just that the DSM experts say that it is not the case with DSM's. I look forward to your results! They may convince me to ignore the experts and have mine degreed :)

Yes either method will work, I suggest using the 97-99 cas, you will need to swap some wires are the CAS will be reading out of phase on the other side of the cam. I don't remember the exact procedure, but you can find it if you search online.

Has anyone gotten this to work? I understand the information provided on RRE, however, I would like to utilize a 97+ sensor in a 96 WITHOUT changing the wiring of the crank angle sensor at all. If anyone can make sense of the wiring diagrams and tell me how to do it, i would be very thankful.

Thanks,

#1, I have UR cam gears that I would like to use, instead of getting new ones.

#2, I understand the 1g CAS into 2g swap, that is not what I am trying to do.

I am basically trying to install a 97+ 7 bolt into a 96.

Thanks again,

Dan

Sweet, bout time you fixed that....

But yea, I juts got a 1g CAS from Dan with the blue talon. Im just waiting for the harness off the car... its way out in the country somewhere, and havent had time to get it.

Later, Dan
