I had this problem and I bought another throttle body. I just took it out of the box and it has similar marks just like it has been leaking coolant aswell:(
Just how common problem is it??

Is this true that one can ruin his throttle body if wrong chemical is used for cleaning throttle body? If so then how to clean it safely?

thanks,

kristo from europe

I have'nt heard of this.

Put new gaskets on it and shaft seals and you should be ok. The shaft seals just solve vacuum leaks.

Use a dedicated TB cleaner or one of the new "sensor safe" cleaners these came about primarily because some older cleaners did bad things to o2 sensors.

Here is one getting new shaft seals.

A pic of the marks you are talking about would be quite helpfull.

ok here is the pic of my "new"(used) throttle body. sorry for the quality but thats the best that I could do...
so there is whiteish crap of some kind in the lower part of the intake manifold side of the throttle body. That was the place my old throttle body leaked water like hell.

Cleaning the throttle body with carb cleaner won't cause coolant leaks. Worst-case scenario, you'll strip a coating off of the TB that is meant to smooth out air-flow.

thanks guys but can anyone tell me why my old throttle body started leaking coolant and why this new throttle body that I bought have whiteish buildup(see the picture couple of posts above) at the same location where my old throttle body leaked coolant out into intake manifold.
thanks!

I can't see that picture for beans.

My car, too, had quite a bit of white buildup in various areas. I believe it relates to aluminum corroding in acidic coolant. I had a leaky head gasket and I think that's what caused my buildups (the exhaust acidified the coolant). I even had to replace some fittings that had corroded almost all the way through.

As to cleaning the throttle body; I ran into this too. Apparently, the problem involves getting cleaner into the idle air bypass parts. If you look at the throat of the TB, you'll see two holes in the side. These holes lead into some mysterious parts in the idle air control mechanism and squirting solvent in there is a no-no. Supposedly, you can destroy a valve in there if you do that. This would not cause a coolant leak, but does screw up your throttle body.

just disconnect the coolant lines, it will actually give u a little bit of power, then there wolnt be anything to leak

thats true, though he may be living in a cold climate where the t-body needs the coolant line so it wont freeze when its cold
