I recently received a unmolested JDM 14b turbo. Visually the turbo looks fine. That is, along with taking off the housings and inspecting the fins for damage. Now my question is as follows. When rebuilding a turbo with a actual turbo rebuild kit, I am assuming that it comes with new seals incase your previous seals are smoking. What exactly do these seals look like? Also is there anyway to visually inspect the seals? I am willing to tear apart the turbo to inspect them. What do I want to look for? I realize that you can take apart a turbo with out getting it balanced as long as you mark the bolts and everything else. Correct? Thanks in advance :thumb:

Thanks for the reply. It looks as if the seals that cause smoking are directly on the center shaft. I am assuming that that is what causes the smoking? Thanks

Yes in most cases the seals that go around the shaft in the center section wear out and the oil pressure (or water pressure) pushes oil (or again coolant/water) into the turbine housing where it then smokes. Thats why you will notice large amounts of smoke coming from the tailpipe but when you pull the plugs there is no sign of oil/coolant in the combustion chamber.
