Woodbury,
I did a search for some information on downpipes and couldn't find anything relating to the cat-back I already have. First a few basic questions, if I get a downpipe, does that automatically eliminate my stock cat or is that only true for some downpipes?

What I would really like to do is find a downpipe that doesn't eliminate the cat (if possible) and also install a high flow cat. Which ones (downpipe and high-flow cats) would you recommend given that I have a Tanabe cat-back?

Oh and I may also want to get an O2 Housing so any favorites there? I looked at the Tuning Guide here (always go there first), but I need to know what your experiences have been with them.

I appreciate all the help and advice I get here!!!!

Thanks,
Annie

Annie,
I have the Apex N1 3in downpipe, to the Apex 3in dunk exhaust, and I LOVE IT. It eliminates the cat, and is fairly straight back, and @ under 200 bucks its a plus. As for the o2 housing, I'm still running a stock one, but I'm planning on doing an external dump as soon as I get around to ripping my car apart again.

I would look into a O2 eliminator DP. I LOVE my DSM Performance O2 Eliminator. I have a test pipe on my car now, so you could put a Cat in there if you wanted to.

Ok you will probably laugh at me but I would really not like to have an exhaust that wouldn't pass an emissions test (not that they do them here anymore, but anyway). I want to maintain a cat in the system. I have read that any tampering with the cat is illegal, even if you replace it with a high-flow. Is that true?

The deal is I am looking for some mods that would cost around $500 total. See my profile for what I currently have...Thanks a million for your help!

I have a gutted cat somewhere.. I've never had a cat on my DSM, so I don't really know about the laws with tampering with a cat. If you don't have emissions I wouldn't really worry about it.. The only problem with my car is that if you ride behind me, its very noxious :)

Are you sure that smell is coming from your car? ;) J/K

IPT - I will have to check into that O2 eliminator DP. Thanks for the suggestion!

Yes i will also recommend an O2 Eliminator DP that's what I have. I also have a 3inch High-Flow cat since I have to pass emission every year. My cat-back is a ATR 3inch stainless steel. Nice and loud.

Later,

MuttedTSiAWD - Do you have a downpipe? And what high-flow cat did you choose? Did you have any problems getting the pieces to bolt up to each other? My only concern is that I have a Tanabe cat-back and I don't intend to go Tanabe for any other pieces since the cost is so high.

Thanks!

My DP and O2 housing is all one 3inch peice. I used a Catco universal 3inch cat and had flanges welded to it. I had a shop custom fab some extra pipe to get everything to fit. If you buy a High-flow cat specific for our cars you won't need any custom welding but the cat will be 200 bucks. My catco was only 50.

Later,

I know that DSM Performance has just made a couple of small changes to their O2 eliminator. The insides are all sanded smooth where there was some weld. I was very impressed when I saw one. I wish I would ahve waited to get mine.. OH well..

Yes, for states having smog laws and smog checks, tampering with the catalytic convertor is illegal. Us Cali boys hate it everyday that we start our cars. On a brighter note, they can't tell much except whether it is there or not. A gutted cat can pass smog visual inspection. A high-flow MIGHT. Some do not look stock on the outside and a mechanic can get rather iffy considering it's his job on the line.
