Here is the deal. My friends gst is getting bottom end knock in the rods. We were told that replacing the short block would fix this. Is this correct?

How much will a new short block cost? Where can he get one?

How much will it cost to have the old one removed and the new one installed?

Yes

These questions are entirely waaay to vague since the answers will vary widely depending on what you do. For instance, shortblock replacements can range from a few hundred dollars (junkyard) to several thousand (vendor). Installs can range from free (yourself) to several thousand $$ (shop) to swap the shortblocks. What is your friends goal both short and long term? These may help narrow the answers down somewhat.

His goal is to fix the problem and keep his engien running good. He won't be installing it himself so I was hoping you could provide him a price for a shop to do it. What would the price be for a decent stock short block that will stand up for awhile?

Well like I already said you are looking at around 400-500 dollars for a good shortblock. What year is this car? I would suggest a 6 bolt replacement if he has a 7 bolt now unless you have a shop build one for you = $$ I would suggest calling some of the DSM vendors to see what they would charge for a shortblock swap, then use that price as leverage against any local shop you are willing to trust in doing it.

My car is getting a new bottom end and here are then numbers that I've gathered:
Dealership-$5500, $3300 for parts and $2200 for labor (the block itself was $1889 new from Mitsu)

Performance Shop-$1200-1400, $600 for good 7 bolt block, $600 labor.

Big name places like Extreme and others will charge more for the bottom end swap (closer to $2000 and over). Hope that helps out some.
