Ok my birthday is coming up this week and im not sure what i need to get for my car. I was thinking about getting a safc. My mods are

catback
downpipe
14b upgrade
intake
hks bov
mbc
boost, air fuel gauge
eibach springs, tokiko struts
everything ported except head

Im about to do a 6 bolt swap. I think i can spend around 350 total for my birthday. What do you guys think i need next? If you suggest safc then should i get the safc 1 or safc II. Any info would be great.

any safc will work. the newer ones have alot more features.

instead of wasting on a SAFC...get a MAF Translator and you will have enuf $ left over to afford a palmlogger

anyone else think i need an afc right now? Or would something else be smarter. I really dont know what to get.

Well I don't see a point in a AFC yet since you don't have a fuel pump or injectors. I woudl get a pump then injectors and an AFC at the same time.

You have a 95, with an EPROM ECU. Anyone that puts an AFC into a 95 is a moron. $300 For AFC plus another $100 or more for a logger to tune it with, or $595 for DSMLink with included logger. DSMLink is far better than AFC, allows you to log far better than any 2G logger( 10x faster logging PLUS logs knock). AND it allows you to adjust fuel and timing seperately, unlike the AFC. It also gets rid of fuel cut and other issues the AFC tries to work around. And it plugs in, no harness hacking required. Tough decision.

If you HAVE to spend that $300 on your car right away, you could always go through and do the maintenance stuff(new plugs, wires, O2 sensor), maybe get a test pipe or fuel pump(you will need it when you turn up the boost).

it is a tough decision its a lot of money for me being a college student and i wont be able to afford dsmlink for a while.

Any other ideas? I already have a cat eliminator downpipe so i dont need a test pipe, i have new plugs and good wires and all the rest maintance stuff.

But when you get an AFC, you need something to tune it with, you will wind up spending close to the same either way. If your money situation is so tight that you would rather do something halfassed, than spend another 100 or so to do it correctly, maybe you should hold off, and use the money on things other than your car. I was a broke college student once, and made the choices to save a hundred bucks here or there buying car stuff by skimping on quality, and every time I regretted it.

Look at all the 2G people trying to tune with the AFC, see how many of them wish they had the ability to log knock, or log at a faster rate. If you understand completely how the AFC works, you will understand why its not worth it, when a little more $$ gets you DSMLink.

You didnt mention fuel pump. You will outflow the fuel pump before you max out your stock injectors. Since you are a college student, I will leave the calculations to you, heres a website with fuel pump flow rates:

is that the little blinky happy rainbow A/F or a real A/F? i wouldn't use it for tuning... i'd invest some money in an EGT if you're going to start tuning

I agree, DSMlink owns the piggyback SAFC/loggers. And ends up costing about teh same in the end.

This guy's got the right idea.

You get a 3.0 or 3.5 inch MAF out of a GM and hook it up before or after the blow off valve (I prefer after so you can get more precise readings, and you can use a vented BOV) and you hook up the MAF translator to send your ecu the dsm signal instead of the GM. The translator is adjustable like the SAFC and reads true intake temperature, especially if it's hooked up after the intercooler, and will give you more timing. It also has been proven to increase full boost spool by around 750 rpms, and increase the turbo whistle because it is so free flowing.

It's around $200 for the translator and the MAF is cheaper, depends where you look. Dejon sells the MAF for $160 which is way over priced, I'm gonna be going to the yard and picking some up and selling them for about $60 shipped if anyone is interested. That is def the route I'm going when I upgrade the fuel/turbo.

Of course with this, you then run back into the problem of how to tune it when you put it on the car. You need a logger to check it all out once it is on. And no point in getting a 2g logger, go back and reread my other posts on this thread.

I think the maf translator is a worthwhile upgrade, just not the first thing to do. Even the guys who make the thing agree about needing a logger of some sort to tune the thing in, and have posted to that effect in this forum. And dont expect that 750rpm increase in spoolup with a turbo as small as a 14b.

anyone have a site where i can find a logger. Are these pretty basic to use? Also what kind of tunning do they allow me to do?

I forgot to mention the logger aspect but even with the SAFC you would need some way to view or log everything, but that is what the gauges are for. If your into tuning roughly and just getting the job done there would be no problem going with an EGT gauge, and an A/F gauge that reads ACTUAL air to fuel ratio, instead of any of the autometer blinky gauges.

As for the turbo, there are numerous people running a 16g and the big 16g that have had that 750 rpm increase in spool time, and they aren't too much bigger than the 14b.

It probably wouldn't be the first thing you should get once you start modding the car, but it's the first thing I'd get (along with a pocketlogger or gauges) once you started the whole tuning stage.
