Well I have added to my own DSM family and purchased a 2g turbo FWD. I got it for 4 grand and thats with a brand new rebuilt motor, the car had 42 miles on it when I bought it. I have been driving it for the past 3 weeks just making sure everything is running ok and it seems to have been going ok so far. Now I just want to know what you guys think I should be looking out for as far as mistakes in the instalation of the engine? I know I have to watch for blue smoke out of the exhaust because that would mean that the seals wernt set correctly and could be leaking oil in the cylinders. When I drive the car around town I shift at 3500 rpm at the highest because I want to be break in the new engine. I plan on doing this until about 3000 or so miles. I did however just come back from this nice open road by my house and I did a harder pull up to about 50mph. I didnt launch the car but I got on it at a 15mph roll. Car seemed to hold up well and I shifted at 5.5 grand. Now something I am just curious about is this sudden power loss at about 4800 rpm. Im not sure what happend but I hit it and it seemed like all that inital power was lost. Could it just be the T-25 sucking as usual? And I am curious about this sound that the car makes when I step on it. It sounds like a mixture of the turbo spooling and the tires spinning, like a loud gust sound with a screatch. Now I can hear the turbo spool seperatly from the sound so I know its something else. If you guys could give me some look out signs and possibly some insight on my questions that would be great.

3000 miles is too much of a break in. When i rebuilt my engine i did 500 miles. First 5oo very easy not going any higher than 4k, getting off the throttle alot to give backpressure to help wear the rings right. Changed oil at 500 miles and drove the car harder but not redline it untill i knew everything is ok. As far as your problem with it studdring after your 15mph to 50 mph pull, you could have hit some boost cut or fuel cut, i would buy a datalogger to see what exactly is going on with your engine. There are pleanty of people that can talk you through what it does, as well as many sites that explaine everything.

Im was just going on 3000 because thats what was recommended to me. I think I figured out what the noise was, a loose belt. The car is now at like 650 miles so Im going to change the oil and then go out and do some harder pulls, but not going to redline. Im still worried that the seals wernt set when the engine was rebuilt but I havent seen any blue smoke latley so I should be good. How long should I wait to start adding performance mods? Or does it matter? I think next week I am going to buy my intake, turbo timer, and MBC. Also I was given a 14b from a friend of mine. I have no idea how much abuse its been through so I was thinking of getting the turbo rebuilt and ported. Where the hell would I go to get that done?

yes i would change the oil now. As far as modding it now, i did right away. The engine is pretty much broken as soon as you started it the first time. The seals and things you wont know till you do a compression check which you can do anytime now, make sure the car is at operating temp. One of the first things to buy would be a fuel pump in my opinion. Turbo timer is a good investment too. As long as the 14b does not have any shaft play you should be fine. There are rebuild kits that you can buy and do your self or send it out to FP.

So I should change the oil and do a compression test? What psi is target on these engines, 120? And as far as porting goes, should I just do that myself? I saw a porting bit on dejontool.com for a dermel I could get. I think there is a vfaq on porting too. So check for shaft play in the 14b then port it? Also, should I get new oil lines or anything else when I install the 14b? Maybe I should just pm you turbobrian because you are the only one who has said anything, thanks.

yes it is very easy. there is a vfaq about it.

What psi is target on these engines, 120?

depends on what piston you used.

And as far as porting goes, should I just do that myself?

its easy if you have the right equipment. an air compresor, or an electric die grinder is what you want. there is a vfaq about it.

read the vfaq. the dremel will take forever to use.

I think there is a vfaq on porting too.

now your talking!

So check for shaft play in the 14b then port it?

yes.

Also, should I get new oil lines or anything else when I install the 14b?

its a good idea to. if the look rusted then they will eventually rust apart and leak. it might be worth the 30 bucks to replace them.

Maybe I should just pm you turbobrian because you are the only one who has said anything, thanks.

Sweet thanks for all the help, Ill IM you some time if I have any more questions.

hey man i would do the timing belt stuff especially the timing belt tensioner dude i would replace that right away..
im telling u this cause i bought a GST 95 for 6000(more expensive in oregon) the timing belt was done as well as new valves and gaskets..
but bout two weeks ago the timing belt slipped cause the timing belt tensioner gave out and now i have u hole in a valve and bout 6 bent valves and i may have a shot t-25 .
All because the shop that the previous owner had the work done did not replace the timing belt tensioner so now im stuck with no GST..
just my two cents man.. good luck

Im not sure what belt it is but Ill check this weekend. Im still going easy on the engine. Do these cars have the automatic belt tighteners? Im thinking that when the guy that rebuilt the motor was putting everything back together he didnt tighten the belt down enough. When I start the car the belt squeeks a little but only when its cold. Then I can hear the belt agian when I get past 3500rpm. You still think its timing belt?

check your alternator belt. To see if this is probobaly the one that is loose, tunr on your a/c, rear defrost, head lights etc. in attemp to make your alternator work harder wich might make it slip easier. Inspect the belt for damage, if its' pretty new just tighten the tensioner adjuster on the alternator.
Hope this helps.
Gooberlog

if it squeels at start up its problably too loose the alternator or the powersteering belts..
the timing belt tesioner is a hidrulic tensioner so yes it is automatic..
and believe you WOULD KNOW when the timing belt is too loose or too tight ..cause your engine would DIE!!!!
good luck man..

The car hasnt died yet so its not timing belt then. Ill check the other belts and change the oil when I put in the new clutch this weekend.
