im thinking of buying this built motor off a guy that lives in florida..he said it was built by a local guy that does motors for basically everyone in the area..he said the motor has never been run since the build, just sat and now hes parting the car out....here are the list of parts

ross pistions
crower rods
block o-ringed
new bearings

now to my questions..i know its hard to tell from the pics, but does anything look out of the ordinary?

are those definitely ross pistions? (never seen any in person, just want to make sure)

have the balance shafts been removed? from the one side pic you should be able to tell, but since ive never really looked or worked much on dsm motors yet im not sure.

any other input would be appreciated, i just want to try and get some other input from someone with more experience with these motors in case im missing something...i have bought from the guy before and had a good transaction..please let me know, thanx

Thinking back to when I built mine, it looks like the balance shafts are gone. You may want to find out exactly who built the motor as they can be very finicky to rebuild and should be done by someone who knows what they're doing. What's the asking price?

im finding out the name of the guy who built it now, ill post when i get his name but like i said, supposedly he builds alot of motors for people in the tampa, fl area

also another thing about the motor, he said it was overbored .20..doubt you can tell from the pics but just thought ide add it in

edit: he's selling it to me for 1600...said thats how much hes got into it with parts

might be wrong here. But everytimes I go to magnus and see Ross pistions. They are always black, and never silver:confused:

those are the "race" pistons that have the black coating, what you see in the pics are the "street" pistons, no coating. If they were wiseco pistons they would have a 8digit number stamped in the top, and JE pistons would be croked in the bore due to the large clearence so they don't seize under boost(jk). The front BS is removed, To tell if the rear one is there you can spin the oil pump and if you line up the oil pump mark then turn Clock wise 1/8 turn and let go and it falls back at all, you have a BS there and need to remove it. Or if you turn the pump and let go it should stop no matter where you let go. Or the back of the block in the middle on the bottom(silver bolt in pic on post 3) there is a 14mm bolt that most people dont know what it is. Well remove it and stick a screwdriver in the hole, there should be no BS there, then use a little RTV and re-install bolt. Good Luck.

thanx for the input so far...anyone else have any pos/neg things they see, or just what they think about the block from the pics? i plan on buying it if i do in the next day or two, so ide like to reassure myself before i by it:D

I'm telling you, find out the name of the guy or shop that built the motor, you'll thank yourself down the line. You may want to find out how old the tensioner, pulleys, and water pump are.

Why don't you just get a built block for about $1800 and be safe.

show me a place that sells built blocks with ross pistons and crower rods for 1800 and i will

aight, got the info on who built the block..

the guys name is jerry..he works out of his own garage/shop and lives in central florida....the owner of the block said that this guy builds like 90% of the dsms in the area and has a mirage that has been converted to a 4g63 awd that runs low 11's...

so someone has had to hear of this guy before...the seller is legit, i bought a vpc off him and everything was in perfect condition as he stated, but with a motor its a little different with there could be problems that the seller doesnt even know about..but i guess its a chance i would have to take

so anyone know of this guy?..please let me know, thanx

I believe the guy he's referring to is on this forum, or maybe dsmtalk and posts every once in a while. His username is lancerman or something like that..Seems like he knows what he's talking about.....

Yeah, I woudl say go for it, but not for 1600..
You are only buying that short block correct? I wouldnt pay more than 1200 for that personally.

really? please explain..i mean ide love to get it for less but...i added up and with all the parts is about 1400 or so (thats NOT including the price of new rod and main bearings, or any of the build or machine work)

again the block is basically brand new according to the seller, and as seen in the pics..the same block sells at other places for around 2400 with the same parts..only diff is its not coming from one of the big online shops, but as long as it was actually built well it wont matter(chance i will have to take)

Your nuts man. I sold my crower rods and ross pistons together for 950.00. That was not in a shortblock thats all assembled with the machine work already done. I personally think its worth the 1600.00

Dood I know Jerry. He's on the tampa boards a lot. He definetaly knows his shyt. I'd trust him with my car anyday. He's good people.
