my 97gsx crankwalked two weeks ago with 87,000 miles. I have a friend who is willing to give me a complete six bolt block for free. Here's my questions:

1. will I have to modify my 2nd gen head to bolt to the block?
2. will my powersteering, alternator, and ac compressor mount to the block?
3. can I still use my dsm-performance o2eliminator dp? will it clear the oil pan?
4. will there be any issues with the transmission mating?
5. is there anything negative about doing this swap beside wiring the cas and not being able to use the tension tool?

any info on these question would be greatly appreciated!!

1. will I have to modify my 2nd gen head to bolt to the block?
Yes you will have to machine the 2G head to fit over the head studs. It looks like it will fit at first glance, but he head aligns on the dowels not studs.

2. will my powersteering, alternator, and ac compressor mount to the block?
Yes

3. can I still use my dsm-performance o2eliminator dp? will it clear the oil pan?
Yes and Yes

4. will there be any issues with the transmission mating?
You will need to use the starter plate from your 2G

5. is there anything negative about doing this swap beside wiring the cas and not being able to use the tension tool?
No

what do you mean not be able to use the tension tool? are you talking about the timing belt tensioner specialty tools? I have them from doing numerous 7 bolt tbelt jobs. I'm switching to a 6 now. So I can't use them?

Regarding #5

From RRE

It's not California SMOG legal to increase base timing. (so be responsible ;-)

Go too far, and you run out of safety margin. The ECU will pull timing when it hears knock, but if your safety margin is all gone, knock turns to deadly detonation, and the ECU can't do a thing to prevent it. All the while, you will be looking at your EGT gage thinking, "hey, it never got hot, why did my motor blow up?"

Reported problems range from none, to annoying, so be aware. At the time of this writing the most common glitch is an increase in CEL's. The most likely CEL to occur is "Random Misfire" Possible problem sources for phantom misfires are intermittent electrical connections and/or noise in an unshielded wiring harness, harmonic vibrations in the timing belt system, or a bad CAS. OBD-II 2G ECU's were designed to detect misfires from a sensor reading directly from the crank. A simulated crank signal from the CAS may not be accurate enough for some ECU's.

For 6-Bolt 1G motor into a 2G: If the timing belt tensioner system from a 1G is used, a timing belt tensioner tool can not be used. This means it is more difficult to swap cam's, or remove the head as the entire timing belt cover will have to be removed to re-set the hydraulic tensioner.

i know this is going off topic alittle, but for the misfires, can you use a dsm link to clear that up? and we do need a laptop to work the dsm link too? sry for just butting in, but i'm building my 6 bolt engine rite now, and just worried about the misfires, so i thought the link would work. thankz guys:talon:

does that mean that the tensioner system from the 7-bolt will work? and make it easier to swap cams, and remove the head?

No! the spacing on the tensioner arm is different. and it doesn't allow enough movement for it to work. It hits the water pump. You must use the 6 bolt timing parts.
The head does not need to be machined. But you will need 1G head studs and the bolt or stud holes in the head will have to be enlarged to accept the 12 mm bolts. Just use a drill bit to open them up a little.
