I'm having a problem with my car holding on to coolant lately. At first I thought that the radiator was starting to go so I had it pressure tested and the guy said it was fine. Then I noticed that it seemed to only happen on short trips, so I pulled the thermostat and found it wasn't opening the whole way so I replaced it along with my radiator cap. The leak stopped for a couple of days and now it's back again. The thing I can't figure out is that it will spew coolant till the check light comes on and they no matter what I do, it won't spill another drop. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Mine looks like it had some green crap flow out of it and down onto some pipes but it's been like that for a few months now.

How high is your coolant filled? It should only be a bit higher then the min line because it expands some when the engine warms up.

How many miles are on your car? Did you use mitsu parts?

I was thinking of replaceing my thermostat?

Any puddles on the ground? How does you exhaust look/smell? Do you go WOT a lot?

If your coolant seems foamy or bubbly, say goodbye to your headgasket. Even if it's not bubbly it can still be the problem.

I don't really drive the car hard (haven't hit 6 grand ever) and I refill the coolant right to line on the bottle, yet it persists on leaking till it's enough to put the light on, then stops and won't leak again till I refill. Usually when it leaks, it's just a small amount, but never a puddle. It shoudn't be the headgasket b/c the guy who owned the car before me had it done at the Mitsu dealer at 90K miles (I have the documentation). I noticed today that it's coming out the excess dump line off the bottle. I'm wondering if there is a way to just get rid of the line or install a smaller hose so it will try to hold more in the bottle. Either that, or it's time for some Gatorade magic.

I had this problem on my 1g. For some reason mine was only while I was on it. I parked the car and had a friend rev the engine to like 6 grand and sure enough coolant would spirt out of my engine bay like a squirt gun. It turns out one of the hoses had touched something hot and melted a little hole so it would leak but only seem bad when pressurized. I just replaced the hose and no problems after that. I dont know if that helped but I just wanted to share my story. Good luck with the problem.

Thanks, I think I'm going to replace the hoses next and see what happens. I'm thinking about getting a hard line for the top, but if it's only happening under pressure, then that might not be a good idea.
