Ok so I have spent a lot of time researching this product so please don't flame me, I even used the search bar lots and google and read up on many other forums. I just have a simple question.

Do the ebay cop setups work, now I'm not asking will it work with out an arc2 or msd cdi, I just want to know if they are functional. I do plan on purchasing a arc 2 soon, but for now it will be hooked up with out one.

Please note I do not bag my talon, its my dd and is beyond well maintained, she still has the plastic bov cap, that's how untouched this car is. I am choosing to do this mod for a few reasons, I want to widen my plug gap ( I know I will need the arc 2 to achieve that ), I would like it to be a smoother idle and cruising car, and hey can't blame me for wanting my motor to look a little flashy.

If you need a link showing the kit I purchased I can add it in I am just a little Leary because the cheapest brand name cop setup I can find is $315 and I cannot justify spending that much on coils for the mods I currently have done... None..

Thanks for reading and I hope to get better responds then " put your money in better places " the only other mods I even look into getting in the future is hard intercooler piping for the stock side mount, and a 2g mas and intake tube. Other then that she will not be getting modded at all.

Yes, COP setups work so long as they are built right. But they haven't been shown to work any better than the stock ignition, even with a CDI controller. They are considered to be purely for looks.

Thanks Wes

I'm not trying to argue with you, it's just from what I've been reading on tuners as well as evolutionm they help with idle and cruising as long as a cdi is present. Wether or not that is true I guess I will find out shortly. But thank you for your input, that was exactly the type of info I'm looking for in this post.

Again thank you for the awesome info, this really helped me understand a lot more about my stock coil. Seems like at the end of the day the only real reason I have now is to improve the engine bays look.. Not really what I was hoping for but I guess I will see once it gets here.

I had a cop setup and to be honest I really did not notice any difference in idle or anything! Now I have my 8mm wires it seems like its doing more then the cop but I dont really know if it is or not! Only issue I had with cop is the boots split and started arcing and the unit was only 9 months old! So thats a down side to it.

The only reason you will need this is for high boost and if you got the plastic bov then your no way mear meeding or even ready for a cop setup. If you want better idle and what not buy link and tune for the better set up

No you must have misread that, sorry I should be more clear. This is going on a 1g I have the plastic cap that goes over top of my bov still. I do not hav a 2g plastic bov.

But thanks for your input

Sorry I thought for a 2g haha, either way its better to just tune it as ive been down this route and it really was a waste of money in my eyes

Does anyone know what to do with the tack wire coming from the oem harness to the stock coil. I ended up getting a new cop kit with carbon fiber plate for $100. So mainly for looks I'd like to install it. But can't find the diagram for the 1990 four wire plug. Anybody????

Off topic(kind of) but to attest to the ebay generic COP quality: I have a 99 expedition, bought a set of 8 on ebay for like 100 bucks, something ridiculously cheap and they are running strong 60k miles later.

Custom gsx, me and you are in the same boat. From what I'm finding all we need to do is get a tach adapter, and the rest wires in like you would for a 91+. This is not comfirmed yet but that's what I'm gathering from my research, and is what I will try to do on mine.

I ommented on your other post about wiring, but one thing i'll point out.. COP is for looks only unless you've got an ECU that has 4 ignitionuotputs for sequential ignition... which DSM's don'thave OEM. you would have to go complete stand alone.. other than that you're actually losing ignition juice to the plugs, even with an arc-II you're still not gonna get as much spark as you would with an ARC II on an OEM two coil setup, reason is you can't change the dwell time no matter what when still firing in a waste spark configuration, so you're only gaining the looks by doing this, any chnges to idle and cruise without going sequential is purely imaginary or exceuses for those who did the mod and realized they weren't happy or went against people advising why not to doit and needed a reason to justify it to others.. you can however do with your car as you please becaus eyou own it, so don't base any thing on what other's think unless you need advice on performance or a fix you can't do yourself...

But if the car is mostly stock you'll be fine as you wont' tell the difference anyway ecause you won't be out-performing the OEM system let alone the OEM system with less power (that's right making a COP without sequential actually loses spark power when you get into the high boost that starts blwoing out the ignition spark)

Ya I'm mainly doing it for looks. My car is modded but not to crazy. I talked to plenty of people running the cop with 20-27psi of boost with no problem. Which I'm not planning on going past 25psi with my 16g. But I have read that link and AEM both can change dwel time. But any ways again just for looks for me and need to know if I need the tach adapter for my 1990. Thanks everyone for the info, this site is awsome for anything.

The only Coil on plug setup out for the DSM that is worth running would be Sparktechs CDI unit with a M&W CDI box and a AEM or other standalone. Honestly unless you are making 1,000hp or more you do not need it.

K, lets make this simpler for people to understand, What do I do with the tach wire so I still have a functioning tachometer the rest is the same as a 91+ so what do I do with that one wire. Surely some one knows.

run it to a tach :D seriousely trhough, there should have been a wire to the white tach wire when you started, leave that same wire hooked up, or if you have the extra little box that came on the 90 model that is a tach adapter reading off the negative signal of the coils then you can leave the white wirte alone. i wasn't trying to discourage, and yes you can change the dwell slightly with AEM, DSMlink and other ECU's, but when in waste spark you only have so much time to work wit. However, if you went with sequential yuou'd be able to almost double the effective charge time of the coils as each would only fire on compression stroke, and not on the exhaust stroke 180* from when it's truely needed allowing more time to charge up for the next spark event..you will be fine honestly, just trying to spread good info that can be well understood, and by no means trying to discount, knock or pick at your modding (hell i love the look of COP setups :D and if i didn'thave issues with spark blowout at times myself once in a while i'd be more inclined to run one as well :D )

Ok thank you guys that was good info, just one last question I understand that the first diagram in that thread is wrong, but they say to wire the tach the same as how it is shown... The writing undernieth the 3 wire connector is to blurred for me to read. Does it say tach interface? And if so where is located . Thanks for helping guys

:)
