Hey guys I am just finishing up my engine build and getting ready to put the engine back in the car. Question is when I spun a balance shaft bearing it filled everything full of metal, including the oil cooler. I have been told its impossible to flush these out. I am looking for 500-600whp is the oil cooler really that big of a deal. If not I will just loop the lines or delete it all together. BTW this is on a 90 with the external oil cooler. Any input would be appreciated!!

Yes, you need an oil cooler. How else is your oil going to dissipate all the heat it absorbs? I'd stay very far away from water cooled OFH's. They leak coolant easily, can come loose dumping your oil, and can crack internally and contaminate the oil. If your not comfortable flushing the cooler and reusing it, get a B&M oil cooler kit and hook it up to the OFH with hose and barb fittings.

OEM is water cooled....:|

I don't run one, my 6bolt swap doesn't have the provisions for the water cooled one. Haven't seen any ill effects yet. One day I might instal a B&M one, but that's just an idea right now.

Yes, for 91-99. And since the dawn of modifying DSM's, people have been trying to find ways to get rid of them. Why? Because they loosen, leak, crack, and sometimes destroy engines.

thats why you make sure and use loctyte and torque to spec:thumb: they did it for those 8 years for a reason IMO. Are the evos water cooled?

If everything Mitsu did was a good idea, then what's with balance shafts, 7-bolts, and T25 turbos? :p

And no, Evo 8-10 are all air cooled with a heat exchanger, I believe 1-7 are also. I know for certain the Evo 3 was air cooled since 7-bolts use their housing for an external cooler.

Water cooled oil coolers are good at keeping the oil at the optimum temp since the coolant also helps warm the oil up, but as far as performance, go with an air cooled oil cooler. If you already had one, why not just throw a new one or a good used one on and go?

Oil to air is hands down the best cooler out there. Absolutley put it on. Do not ditch the cooler your engine needs it. I would be have tempted to replace the one you said got metal shavings in it. But then agin you can flush it several times with gas and brake clean.

The oil to water coolers suck a fat one. The hot engine oil gets cooled by hot engine water? Doesn't make any sense at all!on mine, I use a B&M tranny cooler, just used it as engine oil cooler instead.

With oil to air cooler you can mount if front mount like intercooler style. This mod also adds oil. Which is good! My set up holds 5qts oil not 4.

The oil to air coolers only came on 1990 or JDM. Your very lucky to have the "good one" replace it or double triple clean it. BUT DO NOT DITCH IT ALL TOGETHER. Your engine needs that thing.
